something different to boot. different from my posts so far. not a beautiful scene, but, in my opinion, rather trek-earthy in nature.

what you see is a scene from a highschool freestyle wrestling tournament. a few years ago i was surprised to learn that wrestling was a highly popular sport amongst north american highschoolers. all the participants (athletes, judges, teachers, school-mates) are extremely serious about the whole ordeal.

wrestling season starts by the end of november and extends into february/march of the next year. the season starts with rigorous training session (5-6 times a week) and weekly skirmishes between neighboring schools. the season culminates with regional/state championships.

the first recorded olympic wrestling match occurred in the greek olympics in 708 BC. wrestling was highly valued as a form of military exercise without weapons. in northern america organized highschool/university wrestling seems to have started in 1960-ies. since then, the record of american wrestlers is quite impressive both on the olympic and world championship level.

back to the picture i have posted: the light is quite horrible, so i had to shoot at maximum ISO (6400 i think) to keep the shutter speed reasonably fast @ 1/200 (cannot use flash in order not to distract the wrestlers). as a result, the shots came out quite noisy, and lacking definition (1/200 is still too slow for action sports captures). but i liked this one for the composition and expressions after having cleaned it up a bit with neat-image.

--
how i ended up at this tournament: well, my son is in the team. not him in the photo though. i was too excited when he came out to meet his opponent so the photos did not come out good. :)

Bonjour Kristpas,
photo au coeur de l'action, qui manque peut-être un peu de netteté ou de définition.
Par contre, le moment est bien figé, les attitudes naturelles.
Regards.
Daniel.

Hi Kirstaps,
Excellent action shot of these serious grapplers. Strong clear colors with very good sharpness. Clear capture of the decisive call by the referee.
Regards, Tom

Hi, Kristaps. What I like u-in your picture is the contrast between the judge's attitude with his free arms and the entangled wrestlers. Only for that reason I think your picture was worth posting. The composition is good with a diagonal line running from the wrestlers to the judge.

Kristaps,
a very good moment to capture all teh dynamics of the moment! It seems to me that you got the right moment that cristalizes the whole fight. The judge ending the show and the two wrestlers completely entangled. Which head belongs to which body? :-)
Regards, Peter

I see you have a new toy, too, Kristaps. Looks good for ISO 6400 at this size. I's imagine that you can capture the wrestlers in sorts of interesting entanglements. Our sons have something in common. Mine does not enter competitions and I'm his only opponent though. Best wishes,
Hakan

Excellent action shot, Kristaps.
You seem to be very good at a whole bunch of different photo-stuff.
That tiny bit of "lack of definition" still present in here doesn't bother me one bit!
On the contrary : IMNAAHO it adds dynamics to the picture.
For a maximum ISO and, like delic just pointed out, at this size, this looks like a damn good effort to me.
Cheers,
Fulvio.

in terms of composition and capturing the intensity of the action, I think this is one of the best sport photos I've seen. the gesture of the referee contrasts perfectly with what seems to be two wrestlers, although it's almost impossible to tell ;) I agree with your observations about the technical flaws of the shot, but considering this is your first try - I'm very, VERY impressed. keep up the good work ;)
best,
K.

Hi, Kristaps.
Good scene and very well caught decisive moment.
Good composition, too...
Maybe, I would like it in black and white.
Best regards. Grazyna.

Hello Kristaps,

What a nice timing about the pose of the freestyle wrestling, also the referee with both arms open.
Very nice composition and good colours too.
Thanks for sharing.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
John.

Hi Zemy,
I like this action shot. The tangle of arms and legs contrast with the wide-spred arms of the ref. As Peter said, you captured this at the perfect moment.

Hi Kris,

perfect moment capture and very good composition.

Excellent work!

Hello Kristaps,
This is pretty darn good sports photography considering the slow lens that you were using. If you can manage the expense of a 70-200 F/2.8 lens and set the iso on the D300 to 800 or 1600 you will have a professional sports photography setup. Maybe you son's school can use you to capture some of the sports action. The Sigma lens that you used is simply too slow for this indoor lighting. You already knew that but you still have a pretty good shot. It took a good photographer like you to capture this action as well as you did without a fast aperture lens. You captured the action like a pro.
Stan

Hi Kristaps,

considering that you are busy like me (I think), it's time to check your old work (not so old). Decisive moment indeed. 1/200 seconds precisely shot and "that's it" (as the the guy seems to say with his hands). Very good work my friend. I missed this one. Well done!
Regards,
Carlos
PS: don't see any problem with the high iso (I love this guy in low light conditions) :))

Great, a "trek-earthy" photo, as you write... And a good one ! The expression of the protagonists is very telling, specially the struggling man entangled in an almost impossible way...
The colours on the skin are a bit strange IMO, specially for the arms and legs which are closest to us - probably due to the light in the sports hall ?
Happy to meet humans in your gallery once in a while !
Best regards,
Cath.
