[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
grace episcopal church, designed by architect henry dudley, is a fine building and an excellent example of english gothic architecture standing upright in the very center of downtown amherst, massachusetts. it is also exactly the kind of a building that gives headaches to keen enthusiast photographers, like yours truly. it is surrounded by parking meters, random (or so it seems) street signs, crooked street-lamp posts, wandering parents of local college kids just to name a few of the distractions... ouch...

let me demonstrade a workshop example of the frustration in trying to capture this building "clean"... feel the pain? finally, given up all hope (and the lone tripod in the parking lot behind) i decided to walk up close to the building and take a support-free night shot of the fasade. the result is what i am presenting you here: the moody church. when i say moody, i mean foggy new england november mood... :)

Hello Kristaps
It almost scares me and it would have been a good picture for Halloween with that orange colour at night. The point of view and the angle are incredible.
Good work!
Best regards
Denis!

Not bad at all for a handheld O.4 s! I like the geometry here, and of course POV couldn't be better, the church looks quite dramatic!

Cheers
Alexander

Hi, Kristaps
This capture is interesting with a different point of view. But, me leaning that would have been better you used a tax of lower ISO, around 800 and also to reduce the apperture, putting a F/16 or F/18. I think that the result would be better. Why didn't you use the tripod? For this capture type it is important the use of the tripod. However, the work was nice. Regards, Consuelo

Hello Kristaps,
What a gothic atmosphere, I don't know about the rest, but I like such pictures.

You could try safer settings though, why f/8? you could try f/3.5 and a faster exposure, for a sharper result, as your exposure was 0.4 sec instead 1/10 perhaps. Your stabilized lens might permit you to lower the ISO to 800 for better details, and NEF (raw) could enhance the missing exposure and the adjust mid tones.
Well thats my opinion :)
you still have a great result, your stabilizer worked well with your steady hand at thats exposure level!

Great job

Regards
Stelios

Hi Kristaps,
a most unusual POV that totally works for me,
the angle you chose is just unique.
Great colors too. This could be a spooky castle somewhere in England, for all I know...
0.4s... handheld... pretty amazing result!
Wonderful atmospheric shot, thanks for sharing.
Ciao,
Fulvio

Hi,
Nice evening light. It gives somewhat haunting air to the place.
Yet, it's nicely conveyed. I like it.Oddly enough, it reminds me of the Notre Dame Hunchback

Bonjour Kristaps,
sinistre et lugubre, mais quelle atmsophère avec ces couleurs orangées, de feu.
J'adore cette contre plongée et le cadrage efficace.
Best regards.
Daniel.

Hi Kristaps,
I am surprised that I have passed up this photo of yours. The thumbnails doesn't do it justice. This is a fantastic shot, especially of the fine-art variety. I guarantee that if you enter this in an art-photography show or two that you will get accepted and possibly even win an award. This has tremendous potential as a framed print! Your New England lighting is spooky and beautiful at the same time. This also makes me on the lookout for the Headless Horseman! Outstanding!

Hi Kristaps,

after the first try, I can tell you that the result you present is attractive and interesting. The composition with the low pov and strong perspective was a good start. Your post-processing brings some "gothic" idea in an interesting way. I also like your play with the noise..I just can see it! Great work indeed!
Regards,
Carlos
PS: there is an real abstratism in the ws image. I could see some of this type as the main post. :)
