From Wikipedia
High quality granite was discovered in 1826, and Vinalhaven became one of Maine's largest quarrying centers for the next century. Today the island is dotted with old granite quarries, many of which have since filled with groundwater and are popular swimming holes for residents and visitors alike. Vinalhaven granite, mined by the Bodwell Granite Company, can be seen in the State Department Building in Washington, New York's Brooklyn Bridge and the Union Mutual Life Insurance Building in Boston.[1]

Granite was shipped for Customs Houses and Post Offices in New York, St. Louis, Kansas City, Buffalo, etc., the railroad station and the Board of Trade in Chicago, the Washington Monument and federal office buildings in the Capital, foundation stone and the eight huge polished columns for the nave of the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City, the Pennsylvania Railroad Station and the Masonic Temple in Philadelphia as well as private mansions, monuments, bridges, dams, etc. and thousands of tons of paving blocks for the streets of Portland, Boston, New York, Newark, Philadelphia and other cities. [2]

Vinalhaven is a noted lobster fishing community. Vinalhaven has the largest area of fishing ground in Penobscot Bay, and lobstermen have been known for aggressive fishing practices. Like neighboring North Haven Island, Vinalhaven is well-known for its summer community of wealthy Northeasterners, mostly from Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. The northern end of Vinalhaven, on the Fox Island Thoroughfare opposite North Haven, is often informally considered part of North Haven, since Vinalhaven's north shore is less than half a mile across the Fox Island Thoroughfare from that community's town center.

hello Tom,
including the kayak in the photo gives it a unique touch, I like it a lot, for me it goes well with the idea of jorney of learning and discovery. I also like the photo, the perfect triangle of granite pile and the reflection create a very pleasing composition, and the symmetrical triangle of the kayak definitely adds to the scene. very nice work, my compliments.

with best regards,
Kristine

Hello Tom,
A strangely beautiful picture with an interesting history. There is something unreal, almost absurd, about the island (or maybe it's a peninsula) that appeals to me. I also like the inclusion of the kayak for depth and a feeling of movement. Now I've learnt something about the world through photography ;-)
Regards,
Gert

Hello Tom ,
I like a lot your composition , with your kayak , and the granite hill . The deep blue color of the water is very nice , too .
Congratulations
Denis

Tom, not so much of a beauty shot but the note makes it interesting and appropos to TE. Again it is the front of the boat that gets me, that and the colorful well exposed and composed photo. Fine presentation.

hello tom

wow. quite a sight... if i did not know the pile was an abandoned quarry i would think it was the handiwork of some trolls... :)) love that tip of your boat in pictures: brings feeling of presence and balances the composition nicely (serving as an engaging foreground ojbect) at the same time. superb clarity too!

warm regards,
kristaps

Hi Tom,

Reflection of small mountain on dark water are stunning. Brown boat from your earlier post is helping for excellent leading to shore. Congratulations.

Best Regards,

Hola Tom,
Una buena composición aunque el motivo del fondo no sea especialmente bello. Excelente luz, reflejos y colores con muy buena profundidad.
Cordialmente
Charo

Hi Tom,
Surprising view to see such a pile of big stones on otherwise natural looking environment. I like the kayak front which add another triangular element to this composition. Very nice warm light.
Kari

Hi Tom
Very interesting the pov used for you. The great pile of granite in shape of triangle is marvelous because their reflections were very beautiful and gave an impressionistic image. The colors and contrasts are splendid, too. Well done, regards, Consuelo

Very attractive shot. This is a very beautiful rocky landscape photo with a great POV and superb light.
Best wishes,
Achim

Nicely composed wityh the kayak on the left and the rockpile on the right such that you have allowed for the full reflection.
Phil

Hi Tom,
the stone pieces are very very good written under this light and they are with the part of the boat it shows to them good composed.
A strange place and looks very interesting.
Have nice time.

Hello Tom,
Many thanks for taking us for a Kayak ride without us touching the water, just brilliant!
this is a great view of the granite pile that receiving the warm sun, very beautiful and also the reflection!
well done
best regards
Tony

This look like "cartoon" hill
TFS
Cheers,Braca

hello Tom,

The view of the kayak nose is beginning to be a trademark for your shots! What a novel idea!

What I find interesting about this is the change of interpretation! It is really a slag heap and yet, it has taken on a beauty portrayed against the sky, reflected in the water, surrounded by trees, it could be a ruined pyramid! Can you see what I mean! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

The skills of the photographer are not in question: sharp, clear, detailed, excellent!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Oi Tom,

Hello Tom
Again my first impression bears a relation to an European scape; Mont Saint-Michel at high tide that appears isolated, surrounded by sea!
Your description of granite business has much historical interest as well.
Nice reflexions from the alligator-height point of view!
Best regards.
Robert
