IT takes a certain determination to visit the island of Vinalhaven, Me. Once you've made it to Rockland, halfway up the Maine coast along slow, winding Route 1, you're still a 75-minute ferry ride away. The ferry fits only 16 cars, and reservations are limited, so it's not unusual for motorists on a busy summer day to wait in line for two or even three of the six daily ferries to depart before securing a place on board.

Once you're on the island, though, you are immediately aware of its natural beauty. It's a place of rocky shorelines, dense forests of pine and spruce, swooping sea birds and quiet, secluded coves.

Vinalhaven is proud to be a working-class community first and a recreational retreat second. The town's 1,276 full-time residents include 279 lobstermen and stern men (the second person on a lobster boat) but only 18 waitresses, according to figures supplied by the town. Main Street has one motel, a grocery store, a video rental store, a few retail shops and four restaurants, two of which are open summers only. At the Surfside, a no-frills place with a fine view of the harbor, breakfast is in full swing by 5 a.m., and you can enjoy fish cakes, eggs and an earful about the latest lobster catch or the price of plywood. No credit cards accepted.
In short, Vinalhaven's scene is no scene. There is no movie theater on the island. No swimming pool. No golf course.
The pleasures of the island, though, are wholesome, plentiful and family-friendly. Parkland abounds, with miles of trails through forests and along the shore. Lane's Island, across a bridge from downtown, has a 40-acre preserve managed by the Nature Conservancy with tide pools, rocky and pebble beaches and granite bluffs. Several old granite quarries are now swimming holes (one quarry is decidedly clothing optional).
On summer weekends, cyclists swarm the island for a day on its winding, hilly roads, many of which are unpaved. Sailing enthusiasts use Vinalhaven as a base, while canoeists and sea kayakers explore its hidden inlets and coves.

Ooooooooh, Tom....
that is just magnificent. The color and clarity looks like jewels, wonderful light, great POV with the tip of the kayak, just razor sharp detail and fabulous reflections. What a place that must be to just get away and forget about civilization. This is one beautiful shot and a really great note. Many thanks and warmest wishes,

Hey, good to see you back and I'm looking forward to seeing all your pictures of this most beautiful island. It sounds like the perfect 'get-a-way' spot. A very beautiful introduction to this island. Have a great day!

Superb colors and reflections, I like the blue sky, the extremely picturesque red houses, the water with those boats and the blue sky. Excellent POV and framing, very pleasant light.

TFS,
Andreea

Hola Tom,
Bienvenido de tus vacaciones en TE.
Una bonita toma de este pequeño puerto muy bien realizada. La luz y colores son magníficos y también los reflejos y detalles. Buen trabajo.
Cordialmente
Charo

Hello Tom! These tiny fishing villages are just too much and what a way you had to explore them, it almost feels to be on board with you, and no, I won't comment my N.S. experience again I had when I first tried this kind of sport but it reminds me of it, once more :) The colors are wonderful and the sunshine on the red paint is lovely. On the other hand the paint reminds me of the parties we had in N.S. helping to re-paint the house of my friends and it always seems to me that they wait until we return to get the job back. They probably think the Swiss make it better but it is not true, after some glasses of beer etc. ... Or did I tell you my painting experience before:)))) My N.S. friend Theresa has all her friends coming for the painting party and in the end she does nothing but we all paint. That's her special trick but I truly love her, she is wonderful, and what a story teller, it goes beyond. Have a great Monday, Barbara.

Hi Tom
belle composition de ce port de Vinalhaven, j'aime voir la pointe de ton kayak qui dirige notre regard vers les maisons et le quai, de toute beauté, bravo.

Have a nice day,Bratislav

I rather like this tip-of-the-kayak point of view, Tom. You've got a great position from which to shoot, and you show the shore face of this island and its harbor well. The shimmering reflections in the water are pleasing, as are the ripples on the waves. Perhaps the best thing about this image is simply that it feels as if you are taking us along for the ride.

TFS,
Jim

Hello Tom
I really like the wavy reflection. The kayak arrives to that colourful harbor. Good idea to include a part of the kayak. Thanks for sharing.
Best regrads
Denis!

Hello Tom,
very nice the perspective and the POV of this splendid composition of the island of Vinalhaven.I like the reflections on the water as the shape of the half boat in the foreground, that create depth in the field. The colors and the light are managed great as the sharpness.Informative your note about the island.

Regards,Danos

Hi Tom
Beautiful POV from this boat that brought out the red houses and its excellent reflections. The colors are warm and vivid and the contrasts are beautiful indeed. The pier's fence is very attractive. Beautiful work. Best regards, Consuelo

hello tom

did you have any hickups last weekend, friend? we were talking about you and your comprehensive photo-introduction to american north-east. :)) back to your picture: out of your kayaking shots, i think, i like this the best. fantastic light, feeling of presence (there, in the water with you) and the composition is very pleasing too. my compliments!

with warm regards,
kristaps

ps. that island sounds like quite something... definitely worth visiting. i'm wondering how fast it will turn 80% tourist 20% fishermen though... also, what's the word amongst the fishermen nowadays? isn't the price of gas forcing some out of business? that's what i hear on rhode island coast.

Hello Tom,

It is good to have you back!
You have painted a delightful picture of this place. Just the sort of destination we would always have chosen for our family outings!

The ripples on the water lead our eyes, via the prow, towards the reflections, and finally the delightful houses. These buildings, as well as the name, suggest a Scandinavian or Dutch influence. The details of the architecture and the lovely deep reds, make an exciting scene.
Super composition and crisp, clear exposure.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Tom,
This is a great village! Your POV is nice with the front of your Kayak showing. The reflection is great showing nice depth and balance. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and detail. The red buildings create nice contrast with the nice blue sky.
TFS,
Asa

Hi Tom!
I like you picture very much... it's very pleasant to my eyes: the reflection on the water, the colorful wooden buildings... all in a great POV and composition!
Sharpness is a plus as well!
TFS - Congratulations!

Wonderful light Tom. The exposure was well handled and the POV from your kayak is superb. Sounds like my kind of place.

Tom, great post made even grater by the note. The shot is wonderfully busy and colorful but the note gives it real dimension. Great capture.

hello Tom,
one of your best photos, I'd say, the warm light is pure magic, and the reflection nicely doubles the effect. I like a lot the red of the building, it's a great contrast with the cool blue of the water. including the kayak is a great way to strengthen the feeling of presence, I agree with Kristaps on that. really great shot, and also thanks for the informative note, will have to try and get to this island :)

with best regards,
Kristine

Hello Tom,

This is a gorgeous photo that I had missed, and I am happy now to see the image along with the highly informative note. I wonder why they don't use large ferries, ones that could carry 50 or more cars instead of just 16. The bow of the small boat in the foreground suggests that you are approaching the island by paddling. It is good to know about Vinalhaven.

Warm regards,

Bulent

Ola Tom,
Mais uma bela foto tirado no teu barco ,muito bonitas casas de tons vermelhos , gostei muito do reflexos e dos materiais de pesca em cima do cais de madeira , bom contraste de cores, parabéns!!!
Um abraço Gonçalo

Hi Tom, a very beautiful place there, I like the way you present a part of it with the part of the boat it arrives to the harbor.
It has also very nice soft light.
Have a nice weekend.
