Mount Katahdin

From it's 5,267 feet, Mount Katahdin is the highest peak in Maine, the steepest in New England, and the northern terminus of the famous Appalachian Trail (although the international portion continues up to Gaspesia). The famous Knife Edge is a mile long narrow ridge between Chimney Peak and the Baxter Peak summit where each slope is almost 45 degrees. Mind-boggling, magnificent, sometimes vertically climbing, it's really worth the effort!
That said, Baxter State Park severely limits the access to preserve the exceptionally pristine natural state of the area, even in the empire of SUVs & other oil-lovers. Their credo is often exemplified by "If parking full, come back later". Consequently, at 5am there's already a waiting lane at the park gate, so you'd better camp in site, but that means booking 4 months early.

This Panorama was stitched from a dozen portraits (the original is twice as large), because of the enormous angular distance of the cliffs that would appreciate a wide-angle lens. Fortunately, the sun made an appearance that day despite a shyness in the morning, to make sure we'd get the best colors and a spectacular view.
