Port Clyde, Maine

Marshall Point Light

History

Port Clyde, one of the villages that comprise the town of St. George, became a busy port in the 1800s with granite quarries, tide mills for sawing timber, shipbuilding facilities, and fish canning businesses. The area later became a magnet for writers and artists. Sara Orne Jewett's popular book The Country of the Pointed Firs was written in St. George.

Port Clyde's harbor, sheltered by Hooper Island (also known as Hupper Island), was originally known as Herring Gut. Marshall Point, Port Clyde's southernmost extremity, is at the east side of the southern entrance to the harbor.

To help mariners entering Port Clyde's harbor or passing to the west into Muscongus Bay, Congress appropriated $4000 for a light station at Marshall Point in March 1831. The rubblestone lighthouse tower, completed in 1832, was 20 feet high to the lantern deck. The tower and adjacent one-and-one-half-story stone dwelling ere built at a cost of $2973.17. The first keeper was John Watts, a veteran of the War of 1812. Watts's son, Joshua, took over as keeper in 1835 and stayed until 1839.

The extant 31-foot brick and granite lighthouse was built in 1857. The cylindrical tower is 24 feet from its base to the lantern deck. The lower half is constructed of granite, and the upper half is brick. The new lighthouse was fitted with a fifth-order Fresnel lens showing a fixed white light.

A bell tower with a 1,000-pound bell was added to the station in 1898. The fog bell remained in use until it was replaced by a horn in 1969. The bell was returned to Marshall Point in the late 1980s and is now on display near the keeper's house.

Hi Tom,

What wondrous light .. takes a beautiful scene and makes it extraordinary .. wonderful detail in the shadows .. great sense of the wind off the sea in those flags .. very nice.

take care,

John

Wow, Tom,
this is wonderful! Great composition and the keeper's house looks almost 3-D. The colors are marvelous - I love those soft tones above the lighthouse. That must have been some kind of cold day with that wind whipping those flags that way, even in July. Great job! Thanks and Happy Easter!

Hi Tom,

Pink soft tones on sky are stunning in your photo. Your very well fixed POV adds another dimension. Flag, white facade and greens are perfectly captured with detailed information. Congratulations.

I wish you have a Happy Easter.

Best Regards,

Ertugrul

Hi Tom,
My sense of persective is clearly off, Until I read your note I thought the house was MUCH bigger than the light tower. I would never have guessed that the tower is 31 feet tall. I wonder if the $2973 included the house. What a surprise to hear about a government project that came in under budget.

Hello Tom,
Perfect pov to have this Port Clyde well captured!
beautiful lighting in the shot with good sharpness, wonderful colouration and details
very pleasing
best regards
Tony

Another keeper, Tom. Great lighting and colors. A tight crop on the right, but perhaps the widest angle your lens permitted? In any case, very beautiful and well composed.

Regards,
Jim

Hello Tom,

Lovely composition with the off-centre house but balanced by the flag. The house has that sort of detailed, woody feel to it.
The walkway makes a nice leading line towards the ocean and the wonderfully, pastel coloured sky.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Tom, another great one in your already long list of great photos. It amazes me how low to the ground these light houses are, not like the Carolinas, I guess they aren't meant to cover the same ranges. I find myself thinking about the site in your shots, the work is so routinely good that the mechanics are a given.

Greg

Hello Tom,
This is a fine composition, with many interesting elements!
I notice the rather humble lighthouse, while the keeper's quarters are fare more impressive...
A well balanced composition, and I notice in the fine note they used a bell during foggy periods..!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Tom,
This photo is absolutely superb! The lighting, composition, and the colors are wonderful and you caught Old Glory waving in the blustery wind beautifully! Outstanding work!

the house is very nice, as a design looks very nice, you used a very good POV to compose this image with all details, house, lighthouse, flag and the sea, they are also very good placed.
