Meet the Lupine Lady
A synopsis of Miss Rumphius
Alice was a young girl who dreamt of doing wonderful things, just like her grandfather. She wanted to travel the world, then come home and live in a house by the sea. Her grandfather approved, but told her "You must do a third thing. You must do something to make the world more beautiful."
Alice grew up and she did just as she planned. She traveled the world, then came home to a place by the sea. She planted lupines outside her bedroom window. Then one spring, an old back injury began to bother her and she could do nothing but stay in bed for a long time. She was sad that she was unable to plant more lupine seeds. At the same time, she had in the back of her mind her grandfather's instruction to her. She had no idea what she could do to make the world more beautiful.
The next spring arrived, and Miss Rumphius was up again. Much to her surprise, she discovered a patch of lupines growing where she had not planted any seeds. She realized that seeds from the lupines she had planted had drifted on the wind and planted themselves. Suddenly, she knew how she could make the world more beautiful. She bought bags full of lupine seeds, then spent her time walking and scattering the seeds as she went. The seeds grew into lupines, which produced more seeds that flew off, so the lupine fields grew bigger every year.

Good use of depth of field to capture the lupins in perfect sharpness lifting them from the background, which nevertheless is still clearly visible. I like the delicate purple tones of the flowers, which contrast well with the surrounding greenery. Nice story.

This is kind of new for you Tom, but I like it. The setting in the sea mist / fog and the deeply saturated colors work for me. Fine story to go with the shot as well. Fine capture.

A lovely photograph and an equally lovely story!
It reminded me of Old Appleseed John!
Your dof gives the lupins their deserved place of importance and also gives them a fine context.
Well-saturated colours and fine details.

I read in the paper today that The Directorate for Nature Management in Norway has declared war on lupins, the reason is they are threatening the habitat of Cicindela maritime, a beetle on the Red List living in sandy areas near rivers and creeks.
The lupin is not a natural species here as they were imported from North America for garden use decades back. However the lupin loved the conditions here and spread all over across garden fences…
As I'm looking out of the window I can see pink and blue lupins just like in your fine image!

These are garden flowers in the UK, so its odd to see them growing wild. Very good closeup image with a narrow DOF to help avoid the distractions from the background. The misty atmosphere also helps the lupins stand out.

Good use of a shallow dof with excellent sharpness on the lupins. A superb & informative note. Marvelous colour & framing. Tfs!

I have a weakness for lupins, especially these purple ones, that despite their deep colour seem to illuminate the background which was rather grey that day!
Many thanks to Alice and her wonderful story :))
She really helped make the world more beautiful!
TFS and have a good Sunday!

Hello Tom! My Nova Scotia friend just loves lupines and by the time summer arrives she dives into this world and all her friends seem to share the same passion "have you seen the lupines in my garden" etc. etc. and I mean they are lovely and I find them especially nice the way you show them with a little fog hanging in the trees, in the early mornings for example when everything is slightly wet or damp. Very pretty photo, so much East Coast ... Happy Sunday, Barbara.

The Lupine is a nice flower. The point of view pleases me very much and the great sharpness and focus make me able to see many details. Good work!
