Typical Maine scene viewed on an untypically hot and humid afternoon. The mercury hit the 90's this day in Bernard Maine on the banks of Bass Harbor. The tower on this house is a "Widow's Walk."

Widow's walk
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
A widow's walk (or roofwalk) is a railed rooftop platform, typically on a coastal house, originally designed to observe vessels at sea. The name comes from the wives of mariners who would watch for their spouses to return. In some instances, the ocean took the lives of the mariners, leaving the women as widows; who would often thereafter gaze out to sea wishing beyond hope that their loved ones would return home and hence the name widow's walk was born.

Also beyond their use as viewing platforms they are frequently built around the chimney of the residence creating an easy access route to the chimney. This allows the residents of the home to pour sand down burning chimneys which would otherwise burn the entire house down.

Hello Tom! The contrast of the vibrant greens against the grey wood and clouds really catches the eye here. You captured lots of interesting details for us to savor here including those stacked lobster traps.

Nice capture Tom, very intersting, Americana I suppose. I love the old buoys and pots, super job, especially considering how hot it was...

Hi Tom,
One of the best photos I've seen of the Maine coast. It is so TRUE, from the lush foreground greenery to the boats anchored in the slightly foggy harbor; and all those lobster bouys on the wall are the crowning touch!! You even managed to make the lines a pleasing part of the compo with their slight curve from the photo's edge. Excellent detail and very real colors too. HLJ, Pat

Hi Tom, this construction, this building looks impressive.
Very very well framed and composed with the green in the front and the right part.
It has also nice lightness and depth.
Cheers
Evan

Tom,
The architecture is great and the floats add nice color to the shot. The lighting is handled well with nice color and sharpness. The lush green of the foliage add nice contrast to the ruggedness of the building and gray skies.
TFS,
Asa

Hello Tom,
I like your photos so neat & sharp, this meeeting of precise colors and defined lines, it seems to me to watch in a time machine.
Absolutely bewitching, I hope you passed a charming Indipendence Day.
Wishes.
Violetta

hi tom,
excellent composition to show us how fishing community looks like up in maine. the widow's walk notes for what it is really built for is informative. the green on the FG is an added charm.

An interesting picture with an interesting note.
Good perspective.
Wondered what the coloured objects were but having read the comments, have learnt that they are floats/buoys.
The f/g greenery adds some colour, pity it was a grey day thus the bland sky.Hard to believe that it was so hot!
TFS, regards Jean.

Bonjour Tom, beau cliché de cette édifice originale, dans une marina il peut-être important de voir au loin, belle composition avec tous les éléments autour. ;)
Salutations

Hello Tom,
The wide variation in the shapes and details are eye-catching and hold my attention. You applied the 'rule of thirds' perfectly making the compostion just beautiful. Also the POV adds good depth. Excellent work!
Warm wishes,
Betty
