The Location

More dead wood for you folks. Taken at Silver Lake State Park in Silver Lake, Manistee County, Michigan. That little thin line between the edge of the sand and the sky is Lake Michigan. About 60 miles west is the state of Wisconsin.

The Image

For a few brief moments as the sun was just starting to come out from behind that great cloud formation the whole area took on a weird pinkish hue. I tried to make the best of it.

Hope you like it.

Cheers!

Bob G.

Hello Bob
Nice composition with a perfect cool light.
This death wood is really photogenic.
well done
regards
Claude

This photo was taken in Michigan? I've never been there, but this is certainly not my conception of the place. Thanks for broadening my perspective. I like the sharpness of the wood grain and waves of sand. The cloud formation cooperated well with the sand dune to provide nice shape complementarity, and the setting sun is the cherry on the cake.

great mood, fine exposure and very interesting subject & composition,
regards
jo

Palette of soft pastel colours for a beautiful image.
Excellent light.

Hi Bob, the dry root played the most part of value in your photo. beautiful colors mix, excellent usage of wide angle and the Pro POV made this an Outstanding image, very well seen and captured.
Sam.

Some say that the dead donot tell a story. Thank you for making them very expressive.

Very well done.

Bishnu.

Photo magique

Hi Bob,
another good photo into your portfolio. Very simple composition worked well here. When i first looked at the thumbnail i thought the use of grad filter was very obvious but it's not. It's well used as usually.
Nice work,

v.

Hi Bob, Those dead trees have certainly provided some great material for you. This one, to my eye looks a little dark overall (I find myself peering into my monitor - but that could be old age). The tree in the FG could stand a little more sharpening too perhaps, although masking the black specs to the right to avoid giving them a halo. Compositionally, I wonder whether the tree might have been better further to the left, perhaps moving back slightly and to the right. Mind you, if any of my images were as good as this, as it is, I'd feel better qualified to comment. cheers, Steve

Hello Bob,

Un endroit au décor toujours autant saisissant. Cette vieille souche pétrifiée donne un avant plna captivant et nous dirige vers ce soleil.
A+

Hi Bob,
Michigan seems a photographers dream! These dead trees are so simple yet so very effective, they make such awesome foreground subjects! Great POV... I would disagree with Steve, if anything, I would've (not necessary) placed the tree more to the right of the frame eliminating the black specs on the sand and perhaps balancing the image a little...
Fantastic shot, I really enjoy your work! Keep them coming Bob!
Regards,
Costa.

Hi Bob
Very impressive picture with excvelent POV, sharpness and composition. Overall very nice picture!! I am adding to my favorite, because it is unusuall picture for me!

Kind Regards

Jiri

Very nice timing indeed :)
The stump reminds me of a volcano :D

Ola Bob ,
Ficou magnifico este velho tronco em primeiro plano rodeado por areia , gostei muito do pôr do sol no horizonte , belíssimas cores, bom uso da foto na vertical , parabéns!!!
Um abraço Gonçalo

I know, i know, this is not the one you uploaded today ;-)
Hi Bob,
Do you mind if i am telling you that this is my favorite so far from this series? It's the light what is magic here and for me that's the most important part in an image. The sky looks superb, but also a better balance in the image with the sanddune in the background. And because the dead tree is pointing upwards a vertical composition works better for me than a horizontal version......but what do i know ;-)
But what i do you is that using the Lee you have a great set in your hands, you can't go wrong with them...perfect..!!!
A beauty Bob, you can be proud on the whole serie so far.
Regards, Henk

Bob,
that is the first moment that I'm laying my eyes on your Dead Tree series and I'm in awe. It isn't just the perfectness in the composition and light, but it is also about the idea in presenting this as a series with different moments, different settings, different light and trees. All together this images start to talk to each other and at the end I hear a story behind it. It reminds me of some moments that I had during my last Death Valley trip, but I didn't have this brilliant idea of putting it together as a theme. I will remember of it next time I'm goinf there.
Thanks for the inspiration!
Peter
