Photographer's Note

The 'L' (El; elevated)is the local name for the wonderful rapid transit railway system in Chicago. It is not all elevated and indeed parts pass through tunnels. The oldest sections date from 1892. Pavements (sidewalks) and roads criss-cross underneath and when a train passes over the old railway structures there is a wonderful feeling of 'old Chicago'. I think that the section that I photographed is in South Wabash Avenue which is a walk south of the main downtown area.
