Winter Creek

Firesteel Creek
Mitchell, South Dakota

The frosted banks of Firesteel creek on a cold, humid, foggy, Dakota morning.

This creek has been dammed to form a large lake.... 1000 years ago the now flooded creek banks were the home of a large pre Mandan settlement.

The Mandan were not nomadic plains dwellers .. the lived in villages of lodges along the Missouri and nearby rivers in the Dakotas. The Mandan were decimated in by smallpox in the first half of the 19th Century ... which added fuel to the fire of the many legends about the tribe ... the Mandan were seemingly genetically prone to premature greying .. this quickly translated into a legend of "fair haired" Indians .. combined with the fact they lived in advanced permanent settlements ... fueled stories of their heritage from lost Viking expeditions, the Welsh, the lost tribes of Israel etc. ...

Hello John,

Still a good looking creek with beautiful snow giving textures to the branches. A dreamy sight with good perspective.

ah, what a beautiful shot! truly a place for legends. I like a lot how delicate and lace-like the trees look, more like a painting that a photo. I also like how easily the curve of the creek leads the eye into the shot, there's something very calm and soothing about it. excellent work, John, my compliments.
best,
Kristine

p.s. just a thought - how would the shot look cropped just above the stones in the lower right corner? I keep thinking that removing a bit from the prominent white foreground would enhance the mood of the shot.

Hi John,

I envy your shot again. This is almost B&W and your posting size is double -bonus- for us. Excellent idea as your clever shot. Probably it can be visible only dream or never. I like frozen creek as path and still crystallised trees. Take care.

Friendly Regards,

Hi John,
I enjoy very much such winter views but hey but they lack me since some years we have no snow anymore, like the last year and very few in this winter on the few days around Christmas days!
The snow is right white written and in difficult light situation the trees come great effective.
Have a nice day.
Evangelos

Hello John,
A great snow scene with a wonderful blend of white and grey tones. I like the point of view and the lacy effect of the snow on the bare branches. Very good clarity.

Hello John,
nice Winter view of this frosted banks of the creek, with all these trees to be covered with snow.I'm freezing seeing all this snow to cover the scenery. Fortunately this season in Greece we have during the day roughly 12-16 degrees of Celsius.Informative your note too.

Warm regards,Danos

Hi John,
This white-gray composition is perfect in showing the winter cold. The fog adds a lot to the atmosphere.
Well done
Marc

Hi John,
It certainly is a cold scene you have captured here with all the frost covered branches. The slight over exposure has given it quite a mystical feel about it....as if maybe Jack Frost might appear from around the corner.Take care and TFS.
Regards, David

Oooooh, John,
how do people stand cold like that?? It's really beautiful with all the white frosting the trees, but dang, that looks frigid. I like the curve in the creek and the contrast is superb considering all that white and I like the taller tree to the left of the composition. Beautifully done.... Many thanks and warm regards,
Shelly

I John
Very nice frost composition
I think it's very difficult to live here; the weather condition seem very hard (for me) brrrr :)
We had no snow in Orléans yet for this year.
Take care.

Hello John,

Winter is a beautiful season and when the trees get frosted the days look even nicer. Excellent composition with loads of white stuuf. The frozen creek create a nice path for the eyes to wander into the background. Good compo with excellent sharpness. Thanks John.

Hi John,

it's almost like a b&w image. Very impressive result you've got in this winter view. The minimalism in its colors is what attracte me more. Very beautiful work!

Hi John,
Beautiful somber winter image of the frozen creek bed that is wonderfully framed by the frost encrusted trees. Too bad you did not have a blue sky. I saw a show on PBS about the common legends and cluture shared by the Mandan and the Welsh.

Hi John,
You have a very good eye to make this piece of art from almost nothing. I appreciate your guts to present this almost coloress beauty. The square format is very good and large, and the composition is perfect. Cheers,
Deniz

Beautiful winter scene - this year we a deprived of such views. Black winter in Poland this year :((
Very nice photo - filed with that very special calm only snow can provide :))
Greetings T.

Not very rich in colors, but it is very intesresting and rather unusal to see the surface of the river completly covered with the snow (since snow is getting rare in Paris in winter...) and I believe frozen below the snow cover. The trees on both sides have a furry like aspect with is also very interesting.
Interesting note about this Indian tribe, decimated by an invisible companion of the Europens: an European disease...

All the best,

Emmanuel

Hi John,
I have a similar photo of my pink river. Unfortunately, instead of your delicate frosting of ice, my trees are laden with snow. I also really like the curve of the riverbed.

good mood here with a whisper of daylight and cool snow..
all is well with the trees in their winter gloss and finery
the creek slowly makes its chilly way through the scene ..brings us in and takes us out
cheers

Hello John -

This image just begs to be converted to B&W. The composition is spot on - the rocks in the corner IMO are important part of the composition as it helps us define the stream in all of the snow. Well done.

Thank you for sharing.

John

Hello John,
A very very wintery scenery!
This can of course pass for B&W anytime, hehehe...
Great details in the frozen trees, and the river makes a fine lead-in to winter wondeerland!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Wow, I can feel the coldness of the weather from your photo. I like the texture of the frozen trees and the different tones of white of the photo. I wonder if there are wild animals in this area?

Good note as well.

Wow, tremedous composition. The cloudy sky can make it very difficult to find something picturesque, but you've pulled a fairytale scene out of the wintry day. Splendid shot.

This is a sombre mood winter presentation. The soft texture of the tree branches and leaves and the angular path touch on our state and feelings during winter times...times to reflect, rethink and meditate...

Greetings from wintery canada;)
