Missouri River Fog

Eagle Roost Natural National Landmark
Randall Creek Recreation Area
Just downstream of the Fort Randall Dam and Lake Francis Case.

A frosty and foggy December morning on the Missouri River in South Dakota near the Nebraska border.

This is a little known place that is well worth a visit
The tall cottonwood trees and bluffs below Fort Randall Dam are a protected preserve for bald eagles .. Large numbers of eagles winter here and can typically be seen in the morning fishing over the river ..

This is one of my favorite places .. and a maddening place to be with no telephoto .. I have a bunch of images with 20 pixel eagles hunting over the river .. someday .... anyway I am going to add some distant roosting eagles into the workshop .. and keep coming here on some winter mornings with a telephoto on life's little checklist.

this is hand held at 1/40 using the self timer and a slow breath to help steady the shot ..

A couple earlier posts from this place:

Hallo John!
An interesting and beautiful picture!
An a bit mysterious view caused by the only "hinted" background. Hoarfrost is a most beautiful decoration in nature. A not everyday's photo!
Greetings from cold Germany - and all the best for 2008!
Frank

Hi John,
good frosty impression with a blurred background. I like the clear structure of the branches with all this ice. A Happy 2008 for you and yours.

Hi John,
Very mysterious view of the Big Muddy with lovely snow and ice clinging to the dorment grass and tree with a pretty bit of blue from the frigid waters belows. Reminds me of William Least Heat Moon's "River Hawk " with all the challenges of this difficult river to navigate.
Regards, Tom

Hi dear John, the view is great and very good placed, a right winter view we need to enjoy the coming seazons too.
The icy tree with the fog make an image to imagine nice winter stories.
My best wishes for the new year to you and your family.

minimalistic, dreamy and beautiful. I love the subdued frosty tones, the frost and the mist. Waiting for some then...from this place.

best regards.

Happy New Year John -

I like the rime coving the grass and tree, but the fog seems to be counter acting or down playing the effect of the rime which is really too bad. I think if you had captured this on a bright blue crisp morning it would have more impact.

Thank you for sharing.

John

2 smilies for freezing you B... off.

John, this is pure magic!! The icey tree and grass against the misty turquoise water; I'm not sure how you got such good color here. Most the shots I try of such scenes might as well be B&W. I also like the vertical framing with the tall tree and the sloping bank.

John,
what a tranquil mood and freezing too :-))
the composition seems perfect with the little detail that I think that the object in the left portion covered by the fog is distractive. Thise are the moments that I do some minimal intervention in photoshop. Cloning and cleaning would have given a more pristine look.
How are you doing? Not a lot from you lately. Hope you're doing fine.

Hello John,
first, you made me laugh with your ws!! The eagles laughing at you because of your lenses!! You could have used their eyes to get a better magnification, don't you think?
This shot is very quiet, relaxing. Everything is cool, relaxed and mysterious. I like the huge amount of sky you left at the top. It does all the work in this picture.
Happy new year John,
Marc

Hi John,
Very, very beautiful! In front of images like this one, I almost begin liking Winter. The frozen tree was enough for making it a great photo, but there is also the vision of the lake bellow and the mist, which intensify the a peaceful mood.
Cheers, José.

Hello John,

A very successful hand-held shot. Years ago, while shooting with a Nikon-F, I could use a Questar telescope for 1600-mm (actually the equivalent of a 2400 mm lens). They were sensational for wild-life photos. A double-exposure (not a product of Photoshop) is one that I used the Questar in conjunction with a 135-mm lens to capture Bubble About to Burst. That would be way to get photos of the eagles. Does your physics or astronomy department have a Questar 3 1/2 or 7" telescope?

Warm regards,

Bulent

Hi John!

Beautiful winter scene, with a simple but very elegant composition and the fog adding atmosphere and mystery. Congratulations!

Hercules

Hi John,
BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!! It looks so very cold!! The snow and frost is "frosting" everything in sight. A great winter shot. TFS

Hello Again my friend,
one more time a fantastic ane desolated scene.
Très joli ce gel qui épouse la moindre aspérité des arbres, le moindre bout de branche.
Brume et gel, des conditons extrèmes pour les appareils.
Une fois de plus une ambiance bien rendue.
Regards.

Hello John
An amazing compo. with fog & frost...with the BG almost lost in fog, yet we see some details. The tree in the FG covered with frost is the icing really, holding the compo. A beautiful winter scene well captured.
Best Regards
Angshu

every new day has a brand new beauty no one can deny this fact. your photo is an evidence to this theory despite the fog beautiful view. full of nature indeed.
