Pactola

Pactola Reservoir
The Black Hills
South Dakota.

Well I am ending my series of Black Hills images for the moment.
This is a sunset image from the large man made lake near where we stayed.

It typifies the Black Hills for me .. A place of many worthy sites to see .. covered with tourist traps to take advantage of the people coming to see the sites. The influence of modern society is maddeningly large in many places. Or maybe it is the controversies that make us look at what we have done more closely. However, especially at the quiet times you can easily find the deep spiritual nature of the Black Hills that made them the sacred Paha Sapa to the Lakota. If you approach them with a reverence worthy of them they will repay it a thousand fold.

A very minimalistic, yet effective shot John. The darker shadows that dominate the photo actually really let the red in the sky pop out. Just bright enough to see the framing with the foliage around the edges and the silhouette of the hills at the edge of the lake. A very good note to compliment the photo also.

Nice work.
John

Hi John,
Wonderful soft evening colors captured in this fine evening image. The mood created by the placid lake catching the soft reflections of the pink sky and the wonderfully silhouetted hills makes worth tribute to native reverence.
Regards, Tom

Hi John,

one more image with great light exploitation. You relly did a nice job to get reflection even at that time of the day. The foreground branchs add a lot to the compo and the sky color tones as well. Very pleasant image. Well done!

Carlos

Hi John,

Another beautiful image, this one full of poetry and intimacy. The darkness is not easy to shot, but here you has reached and admirable outcome. The colored sky is a little bit of contrast, the whole frame is a beautiful invitation to silence.... Great!

Greetings,
Angel.

Hi John,
Indeed the thumbnail does not do justice to the ethereal quality of the photo. The suble reflections and the silhouettes of the trees on either side are quite effective. I would have preferred a slightly brighter view, but the ambience here is certainly appreciated. The pink sunset is also subtle and contributes mightily to the success of the shot. The Black Hills have often been described in literature as mysterious, and your photo does not dissipate that view. Cheers.
John

Peaceful evening and lake. Great shot with the reddish colours in the background breaking the dark of the evening very well. Good sharpness and excellent point of view. The lake look huge from this point. Good framing and beautiful place to share. Thanks John.

Hello John
The effect of the slow shutter speed shows in the silky sheen of the lake water. But the sky is the 'killer' here...just seems to pop out. Well done with framing with the foliage. As always a well written note.
