Canyon Flowers in the Evening

Roughlock Falls Trail
On a small side canyon of Spearfish Canyon
The Black Hills
South Dakota

My two favorite natural areas in the Black Hills are Custer State Park in the South and Spearfish Canyon in the North.

You can drive to Roughlock falls but the trail is a beautiful walk from down this canyon from the parking lot of the Latchstring inn. In retrospect well worth the walk.

On our evening walk up to Roughlock falls we rounded a corner in the trail and stepped out onto a small bridge.

Why don't you just rob a bank and go and buy a Hasselblad - you're clearly in love with the square format!
Personally I've always preferred rectangles, but the square crop works well here. I like how the blue sky is enclosed by the mountains and trees on either side, and there's a nice echo of the sky in the colours of the flowers and stream at the bottom of the frame. Great light too.
Good work John.

Cheers,
Ben

Lovely shadowplay in a lovely picture, John.
I can almost smell the Black Hills...
I'm so jet-lagged that I'm ready to fly back 7000 miles just to get rid of it...
Have a great weekend.

Ciao,
Fulvio.

John,
I like the contrast created by the areas of sun and shadow. I like the stream running through the scene giving the photo nice direction. The lighting and colors are great with nice sharpness and detail.

Asa

Hi John,

Light and shadows very well distributed in the shot, giving a great relief and composing a truly balanced image. It's quite impressive this canyon, and you captures its beauty accurately! I like the dyr trees in the middle of this riche vegetation! Really beautiful! Thanks.

Hi John,
The clear blue stream running right towards the shear canyon wall creates a wonderful feeling of depth. The vibrant green makes a beautiful contrast with sandstone cliffs and the vibrant blue sky the perfect backdrop for this stunning image.

Hi John
It's a very nice mixing between shades and lights; very wonderfull place indeed.
To have a bigger picture you should use the 800 x 800 pixels dimensions.
Cheers.

Hello John.
Very beautiful. Lovely light and colour. Great POV. Good composition. You find these lovely places to visit. Well done once again.
Best regards, Steve.

John,
a very interesting square frame approach that really works extremely good here with the blue flowers in the lower part competing with the blue in the upper portion. Inbetween the warm colors of the sunlite rocks of the canyon. Are you also a composer? In that case a pretty good one. Something along the lines with Arvo Paert?
Regards, Peter

Congratulations.

Hello John! Wonderful scenery in this one captured under great light. The various shades of greens (and their densities) are offset beautifully by the flowers.

Well done!
Doug

Hola John,
Magnífico cañón lleno de vegetación.
Un paisaje espléndido con excelente luz y colores.
Saludos cordiales

Hi John,
The beauty of this photo is far exceeded by the beuaty of your 'Contemplation of Four Mountains.' There is amazing expressiveness in your wordless choir. As I read the program notes and listen to the music, I do think of your son communicationg without words.
It is surprising to my California eyes to see such a lush landscape in August. I was just looking at my son's pix os a climb up the mountaineer's route of Whitney; in spite of the last remnants a glacier, it's VERY brown. Of course I guess the very high may have something to do with it too.
HLJ, Pat

Hi John. Your POV and composition makes this look like a part of the canyon that not many people get too - at least we can't see much evidence of a trail through here. I like how the late afternoon light is highlighting the canyon walls - but you've still managed to retain plenty of details in the shdaow areas. The square format works well here too. Cheers . . . David

John,

This shot is just breathtaking, what a beautiful place... it seems to be untouched by civilization. I like your POV too. TFS
