The Lake Awakens

Sylvan Lake
Custer State Park
The Black Hills
South Dakota

After taking some images of the morning light hitting the impressive "wall' of Sylvan Lake. I took a wonderful morning stroll around the lake. It was almost empty .. a couple of photographers .. a few people fishing .. It was beautiful among the rocks along the North shore of the lake as the morning light crept slowly over the rocks .. a heck of a time for my abilities to control this light range .. but a wonderful place to be.

Hello John,
Unique composition from between the rocks. Love the mood, reflection and the first light of the day. Regards,
Hakan

John -

I think the shadows actually work quite well here (except possibly for a bit on the center left edge, and even there I would probably end up leaving it alone); they give a very noce mood and set off that bit of light reflection center right. If you had moved a few inches to the right, you would have taken out that dead tree. Some people will like it, but it bothers me here. Minor point, though, in a great use of light.

Hi John,
the shadows work very well for me. I wouldn't change one bit in this shot.
Morning light is morning light, as simple as that. Great effort and a perfect POV to convey those lovely reflections in the water.
As always, I appreciate your skills and honesty in your pictures, as opposed to the overdoses of photographic face-lifting I daily witness on this site. Thanks for sharing.

Hugs,
Fulvio.

Hello John
Another picture full of serenity.
Great colours and a good point of view.
Well done
Greetings from the Alps
Claude

Hi John, the angle you shot it and the excellent light balance with the superb reflections make it stunning and very atmospheric.
Cheers
Evan

Hi John,

Great play with the light: I like the shadowy shot, guiding our eyes through the water until the light's explosion in the background. It's a dramatic impression very well done! The stone's texture is really good too! Beautifully and well done!

Greetings,
Angel.

wow,
beautiful deep colours, nice composition, reflections are stunning, well done
regards

Hi John,
Very peaceful charming image with wonderful contrasting colors reflecting brilliantly in the still water of this wild lake. The framing of the lake by the huge grey boulders adds excellent depth to this fine wild landscape.
Regards, Tom

Hi John
Woowww , what a nice and stunning place and water.
Very good capture my friend.
Colors and compo is great.
TFS/Kind regards

John,
An amazing light and exposure management in this one, with impressive amount of details in all the parts of the image.
I like a lot how you "framed" the lit part between the rocks.
Beautiful,
Regards,
JB.

Did you visit the whole country?:)You POV was a good choice but.I think now the foreground is too dark...I would like to see much more of texture of rocks :)The reflection is amazing
Hugs for Bug :)

John, c'est superbe ces tons foncés pour l'eau et les rochers. Le soleil vient éclairer une partie du paysage comme pour mettre en valeur par opposition les tons plus sombres.
Jacques

Hi John,
this view from the shadows to the light is pleasant and the water and rocks makes it beautiful. Fine reflection of the trees and good sharpness and clarity.

Hallo John!
This is one of your most atmospheric pictures! One nearly doesn't dare to breath in order to not disturb this wonderful scenery (...was this good English !? ;-). You managed these beautiful but difficult light conditions in a skillful way. A picture to dream into ...
Greetings from Germany - and have a nice weekend!
Frank

Hello John,

This is a very lovely picture. Great sharpness and nice reflection.

Well done
Sothy

Hi John,
This is amazing. Love blue and green and reflections on the water. Your POV gives me a feeling of being there, sitting on a rock somewhere. Great composition.
All the best,
Claire

Hi John,

in the thumbnail I was in a doupt about the details of the shadow areas but looking at it in the right size just tells me I was wrong. It definilety has a great light management. I like to see the contrast highlight/shadow in this great composition. Don't need to say that the place is beautiful. Excellent capture!
Regards,
Carlos

Superb shot,John!!!
I like this wonderful composition with shadow and sunlight!
Very beautiful place and magic picture!
Best Regards!
Yuri

Hi John, Your POV is excellent I like the use of the surrounding rocks, the water is so calm & looks as if there's not a ripple in sight, wonderful light, the contrast between the shaded area in the foreground & that of the bright light in the distance has been composed very well, wonderful colours & reflections, TFS, kind regards Wilson.

Hi John,
incredible job as usual. You really wake up that early all the time? Some people rose up as early as you...look at the red spots in the background:D
I think the foreground is a bit dark. I don't think it should be as bright as in the workshop, but somewhere in the middle of it would be fine I think.
That tree trunk at the bottom? It would have made a nice foreground if a bigger piece of it was visible. Was it possible to show more of it? Now we just see a tiny part in the shadows...
Good evening!
Marc

Hi John,
What a pov and light! The sense of depth and calm is amazing. It really feels like a wonderful morning!
It's pure beauty! Congratulations!
Regards, José.

Well heck John, you have managed the light well enough to produce this stunning image. I think the shaded rocks are an excellent counterpoint to the wonderful colour of the woods and sky and their reflections. I love the way the rocks have framed this shot also. Excellent work. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Hi John,
this is realy impressive view. Crystal water and nice lightening. Maybe I miss little light on stones in front which should bring more depth, but it´s just a detail.
regards,
Stanislav

Olá John, fascinating place for some good walks completely emerged in the Nature. This original composition with the dark FG really attracts me. Love the imposing rock at right pointing to the lovely background like an arrow. The calm atmosphere is amazing. Great shot.
All the best,
ricardo
