James River in White

Another shot of the frosty and foggy morning on which I did some shooting while visiting my parents over the holidays ...

The funny thing is that I got up before dawn to get out and catch the frost I saw forming the night before here .. I didn't take into account how much more humid it is here in the lake and river pocked farmland of "East River" South Dakota) .. as opposed to the dry ranch land of Colorado (where I currently live). After my efforts the fog and the frost held through most of the day ....

A river of many names .. Etazipokase Wakpa in (I believe) Lakota (Sioux) .. literally translates as the "unnavigable river" ... which is very accurate .. this is the longest unnavigable river in the world.

The river was named the James river (also called the Jim river) by a railroad worker. It was later officially changed to the Dakota river .. but not officially enough to take over local parlance .. or any maps I have seen ...

The state of South Dakota is divided into several geographic regions .. The state is bisected by the Missouri river .. on the far west edge of the state are the Black Hills (a smaller but beautiful prelude to the Rocky Mountains further West) .. the rest of "West River" is mostly arid ranch land, badlands, and large the large reservations of the Sioux. "East River" is gradually drying end of the rich wet farmland of Iowa and southern Minnesota.

My gosh,
that is just TOOO much snow and ice. :)) You did an incredibly nice job with all the white and still got nice shadows and good detail. Great note, too. This is a really (ahem) COOL shot. LOL Take care, John and thanks,
Shelly

Hi John,

what an exquisite view. I'm amazed by the minimalism in its colors and details. It's a powerful composition indeed. It's the prove we can do a lot with less :) Very good work!

Carlos

perfect illustration that "less is more" - I don't think a landscape photo can get much more minimalistic than this, but the result is spectacular. I like a lot the lace-like patterns of the frozen branches and how the fog and mist create a feeling of silence, as if the place was covered with a thick and soft blanket. simply beautiful.
have a great Sunday,
Kristine

hejsan John
There is something with snow, how a landscape so dramaticly can changes in such short time, from being filled of millions of colors and tones to be BW graphical. I wonder "Where have all the colors gone short time passing" even where theri no snow color tunes seems to diapaers..
Back to image. I like that the river ends up in nothing, a Haze of coldness It gives it a mystic mood.
Cheers Mate

Hi John,
Very cold looking western landscape as the wind wips up a snowy haze along the banks of this frozen river. The frost encrusted trees make a very effective frame for this chilly image.

Beautiful, minimalistic photo.
Like the sky is darker than the river :))
Superb BW conversion.

Hi John,
A wonderful minimalist compo that reminds me a Japanese or Chinese drawing. Very inspiring... And cold also, but certainly cold-hearted.
This "study" of yours showing almost the same POV in diffrent times of year.

Not so magical as James River in Magenta, but also very interesting, especially for me who never lived in snow country.

Hello John
Amazing beauty of the winter landscape. Quite minimalistic, yet there lies the beauty. I like the how the frozen branches look like laces as they bend over the river. The silence is almost 'audible'...and the tones so well depicted. Good work John!

Hola John,
Me encanta la textura suave de esta toma invadida por la niebla. Un ambiente helado muy bello con estupenda atmósfera.
Cordialmente
Charo

You made the best of the light here, wonderful effect, I want to say minimalism, but it's not quite that, there is something else in the atmosphere, maybe it's the way the detailed frosted branches balance the blank sky and river surface.
