A sunflower field
on "Betts Road"
between Mitchell and Delmont
South Dakota

I shot this as I was beginning my 600 mile journey home after a trip with my daughters to their grandparent's house over the labor day holiday weekend. The main point of our trip was to visit the girls great grandmother Ruby. Ruby is 94 years old and still going strong.

How much has this area changed in the last century or so? I often think of what this region must have been like when my great grand parents moved our here as children in the late the 1880s and 1890s. Now it is a gentle tamed land of farms and section roads on a square mile grid (granted many still not paved).

600 Miles by car...what a nightmare for me that i hat to drive!
good picture John, colorful and full of light.
it's a pity for the signal in the opposite direction! and congratulation to Ruby!
ciao

Hello John,
A good view of this field of sunflowers. The image has very good colours and excellent sharpness. I am a little uncertain as to why you included the signpost in the frame particularly as it faces away from the camera. On the other hand it does add a certain something in the way of contrasting texture and tone and is not unduly obtrusive.

The light was beautiful here John, but I'm not so sure that your shot works compositionally.
The biggest problem is that there's too much of a gap between the bottom of the frame and the field of sunflowers. I'm guessing that's because you wanted to include the sign, but as only the back of it is visible I think you'd have been better to get closer to the field and exclude the sign altogether.
While close-ups of sunflowers make cliched subjects, there's no denying that they make very attractive cliched subjects, and I think if you'd got closer your shot would have had a lot more impact.
Did you take this out of the car window?

Cheers,
Ben

Hallo John!
A beautiful and in combination with your thoughts in the note, an interesting picture. The flowerfield - all are "looking" to the sun - and the sign pole show that there isn't pure nature any longer ver well. But nevertheless one has the feeling of wideness and somehow nature - even if it's commercialized ...
Greetings from a bit autumnal Germany!Frank

Hi John,
I think this is a wonderful shot, masterful in its nostalgic simplicity.
It makes me think of something... I can't quite pinpoint what it fully is, but it's something I know I've lost along the road a long time ago... It comes back once in a while, at least... a tiny glimpse of it, but it never stays for long.
Made me also think straight away of Robert Johnson, Charlie Patton, Skip James... the Delta Blues... Like, it's South Dakota, but it could be anywhere up in the Mississippi Delta.
As you know, the meditative type of shot is definitely my can of beer.
Once again, in my opinion : a masterful effort, John!
Thanks for sharing. I particularly appreciate pictures that rise way above those petty discussions about all sorts of technicalities and actually give you stuff to think about...
There again... I've always been more into Country Blues than algebra!

Hugs,
Fulvio.

Hi, John,
this is a beautifully simple and lovely shot. I like the way the flowers are veed from the corner and the light and color are wonderful. It is a nostalgic shot and fall always brings that on anyway. Great job!! Warm regards,
Shelly

Hi John,
A not so typical Mid-Western crop. Great colors & exposure. I agree with Ben on the composition. Regards. Latiff.

John,
There is something very interesting in the geometric of this image.
The lign of the road sign, contrasting with the diagonals of the field, all is nice, with great saturated colors.
Regards,
JB.

Hi John,

It's not easy to write about it. Most important than anything, I like it very much. That light, colours and the vastness of the landscape makes it very pretty. The stop sign makes me think of some hidden message you want to send to the viewers. However, I tend to agree with Ben about the compo not being so great; not bad at all, but with nothing spectacular about it. On the other hand, I guess that it is not easy to compose images on such a landscape, so I wonder if I wouldn't say the contrary if I knew the place. I don't know if the slight inclination on the horizon is natural, but it looks tilted, with the pole of the sign not helping a bit.

I don't know if that hasn't much to do with your meditative note, but the fact is that I sense much of your nostalgia while looking at it.

Quite a surprise seeing sunflowers in September...

Take care, and have a nice weekend.
José

Hi John,

Splendid sunflower field together with the dark zone of the trees in middle of the picture.
This everything against a strong blue sky, pleasant for looking.
Thanks for sharing.

Have a nic eweekend,
John.

I usually associate sunflowers with France so there's another gap in my education filled. The field is vast and the light is good. I read the thread about the sign and your struggles with composition. I just tried a crop as an alternative. See what you think.

Hi John,
Its been a while...good to see you.Noticed you uploaded some images to TL and the accompanying notes are truly enlightening and informative.....TFS.Lovely depth in this one....the sunflowers just seem to go on forever.I read your discussion with Ben and understand there wasn't a lot to do with the sign...can't have it all.Colours of summer!

Hi John, the light majestic-wonderful, the point of view is excellent to include a little more out of the sunflowers field.
I agree with Paolo about the signal and the opposite side.
Cheers

Hi John,
Beautiful summer landscape of thes magnificent sunflowers all face in the same direction as the search for the bright light. Beautiful contrast between the yellow and green as well as the yellow complimenting the blue summer sky.

Hello John
The field of sunflowers, captured right from the corner, provides an excellent dual perspective. I'm not too sure about the post though. It would have been good if it was to the left & if we could see the front side. But it facing the other way, out of the frame, did not contribute anything positive IMHO. Maybe a POV more to the right & a closeup of the field & the front of the signage as an alternate version?!
Best Regards
Angshu

Simple but nice. Choosing the corner of the field was a good idea, to obtain a slightly triangular effect. Excellent colors, with a nice transition of blue in the sky, and a good note. And excellent sharpness.

All the best,

Emmanuel

A lovely field of flowers, and a surprising, but effective, use of the stop sign in the composition. It's not profound, but it really works. As for the taming -- I find it interesting that the stop sign here is posted on an obviously shorn hunk of log, rather than a standard-fare, DOT-issue metal pole. Maybe it's not quite so "tamed" as would appear at first blush.

Hi John
Nice idea to "stop" for a breath of fresh air and admire such a colourful army of sunflowers whom each soldier is so attentive to commands of sun!
Best regards.
