Flood Abstract

Another sunset image in this series of this flood ... from a small dirt road along the side of the flooded river .. which would normally a small river resting against the distant bluff.

James River - or Jim River - or Dakota River - or Etazipokase Wakpa
near Mitchell, South Dakota

The interaction of the low branches in the same space as the reflected branches of the trees I think is what grabbed me about this one.

Ruthlessly pasted from my previous post:
A river of many names .. Etazipokase Wakpa in (I believe) Lakota .. literally translates as the "unnavigable river" ... which is very accurate .. this is the longest unnavigable river in the world.

The river was named the James river (also called the Jim river) by a railroad worker. It was later officially changed to the Dakota river .. but not officially enough to take over local parlance .. or most maps I have seen ...

For my Spring Break vacation last week I took my smallest daughter and headed off the 600 miles for parents place in South Dakota .. and then up to see my brother in Minnesota .. not as good of photographic vacation as I had hoped thanks to my flu, schedule and weather (ah well ..) but one of the more striking things I encountered was the flooded river. ... maybe 10 times the typical size of the small river .. thanks to a massive March blizzard and rapid melt .. the typical spring flooding of this area was certainly exaggerated this year.

Hello John. What a nice reflection. The other thing that I like is the colors of the photo. Very nice lighting. It is simple, but eye catching. By the way, when is a good time to visit Colorodo? I guess it is green up there now, right? My friends and me plan to visit Rocky mountains. Where else would be good? Thanks
Sothy

Fascinating image: it seems that reality and reflection are all tangled up (rather like real life at times).
superb colours once again: a most unusual but effective palette

It makes you think......nature, even at its most destructive can still be beautiful. This beautiful light and reflections make a stunning picture. Good work.

Hi John,
This wonderful landscape seems to be two photos with the strong dramatic light in the back with a more relaxing less dramatic foreground. The reflections are stunning throughout and the color and light intriguing.

Hi John,

An intriguing shot, as if there are a pair of horizon lines, rather than one. But a close scrutiny reveals, of course, that there is a single horizon line, the little patch of land has trees growing on it. A simple and elegant photo,

Regards,

Bulent

Hello John
What I like about this one? The colours & the layers, the silhouettes & the reflections... The horizontal lines of the banks & the verticals of the tree trunks...and to top it all the lovely pinkish hue. What a beauty!

Angshu

Hi John,

Beautiful shot, love the reflection in the water, I think the use of it as your main foreground focus has worked really well. TFS
