Sunrise Flood

James River - or Jim River - or Dakota River - or Etazipokase Wakpa
near Mitchell, South Dakota

Sunrise on the James river flood .. you can see the actual channel in the distance at the base of the bluffs.

This is supposed to be a field access road for a farmer .. not a boat ramp.

Ruthlessly pasted from my previous post:
A river of many names .. Etazipokase Wakpa in (I believe) Lakota .. literally translates as the "unnavigable river" ... which is very accurate .. this is the longest unnavigable river in the world.

The river was named the James river (also called the Jim river) by a railroad worker. It was later officially changed to the Dakota river .. but not officially enough to take over local parlance .. or most maps I have seen ...

For my Spring Break vacation last week I took my smallest daughter and headed off the 600 miles for parents place in South Dakota .. and then up to see my brother in Minnesota .. not as good of photographic vacation as I had hoped thanks to my flu, schedule and weather (ah well ..) but one of the more striking things I encountered was the flooded river. ... maybe 10 times the typical size of the small river .. thanks to a massive March blizzard and rapid melt .. the typical spring flooding of this area was certainly exaggerated this year.

Hi John
You used the light well to capture extraordinary color; the detail of the highlighted grass and the the lacework of branches shows your excellent focus. I particularly like the way you did this as a series with the violet colors of sunset and the rasy sunrise glow. I would imagine travelling with a 4 y/o also had somne impact on your ability to take photos. Hope you've thrown off the bug; That flu can really hang on. HLJ, pat

Hi John,
the light impression is wonderful, so soft. You got a great result of colours in different layers changing with water and ground till it meets the sky. The branches against the sky are trying to break out of the image.

hi john,
beautiful light you have here, lovely orange/pink(ish) tones. they actually warm up the leafless trees and the entire scene.
well seen and composed image!
tfs,
dora

hope you both had a good spring break :)!

Hello John,
A beautiful if somewhat desolate scene of this river in flood. Beautiful pink tones in the sky and lovely golden lighting on the foreground grass makes for a very evocative image.

Hi John,

What an ethereal vision. The composition and exposure are first rate in this image, giving a view of an entirely unspoiled area the country. I enjoyed very much the personal note as well. Warm regards,
Bulent

Hi John,
A beautiful sunrise scene. Lighting is particularly good in this composition showcasing the river flood. There is good sharpness, and the colors appear very natural and are pleasing. Best wishes, Danilo

Hello John -

The color appears to be the dominate theme here. IMO, I think the composition is a bit weak in that there is not a dominate foreground feature to hold the viewers attention. The use of the road as leading line was the beginning of a good element but it just leads me out of the image. If the road had lead into the image, maybe a portion beyond the near flooding it might have worked as an effective element. Also, the shallow DOF has left the mid-distance and background soft and OOF. I know this has been a harsh review but IMO an image needs more than just nice colors.

Thank you for sharing

John

Hi John,

I am sorry that you holidays ended and I am glad to see you back. I only hope that the flu has already gone.

Very nice capture of the first sun rays over that strange landscape (or should I say waterscape?). Those naked trees on the water and the yellow and violet sky produce a mystical and dramatic atmosphere.

Regards, José.

Hi John,
Beautiful morning light produces wonderful pink glow that dominates this photo. I like the road coming to an abrupt end, the fence and twisted trees are elements that give the photo mystery.
Regards, Tom

John,
A nice compo with pleasant atmosphere.
The magenta dominant adds to the atmosphere.
Very nice,

I like the soft colors , great composition and I guess its that time of year, lots of spring flooding. TFS
