Forest, Rain, & Deer

Custer State Park
the Black Hills of South Dakota

The sun was just emerging to break up a heavy morning rain when I met this couple. Ended up with a hand held thing at ISO 200 (in my experience not a pretty thing on the Oly E300)

Custer State Park (and the adjacent Wind Cave National Park) is one of my favorite places in South Dakota. Away from the tourist traps surrounding Black Hills icons such as Deadwood and Mt. Rushmore .. Custer/Wind Cave is a hidden jewel .. thick woods .. beautiful lakes .. teeming with wildlife ..

This one of the best mornings of my year .. even with the rain ..
I had a dawn walk around the always beautiful Sylvan lake .. a dark moody drive through "the needles" .. met a couple bison along the road, some wild turkey, antelope, and numerous deer ..
(See the Black Hills theme - hopefully to the left)

Bonjour John,
une petite scène cocasse et sympathque, une thumb qui ne donne aucune chance de pouvoir deviner le contenu de la photo que je dévine pas facile à prendre.
Bets regards.
Daniel.

Hello John
I like the color of those two deers. It fits well with the lush green grass and the brown trunks of the trees. I wish to be there and to see them in real. Nice picture
Best regards
Denis!

Hi John,
Wow What a rack on that buck. The golden colors of the deer stands out nicely against the green. Wonderful details seen to the storn damaged woods.
Regards, Tom

Hi John, one of my favourite times to photograph is immediately after a storm. The colours are vibrant, as in this shot of yours. The deer walking across your path are a real added bonus.

Thanks, John

Hej John,
Never heard of Raindeers,
Beautiful woods, this kind of forest that's getting rarer and rarer in Europe because of the timber industrie. today it's below 1 % of the swedish forest that's more than 100 years old.
Like your kind of snapshot picture of the Deer and how well integreated it is to the enviroment.
Cheers and a nice weekend.
Anders

Lovely one, John.
Love the color of those deers and the way you managed to position them in your compo.
Even at ISO 200 and hand-held this picture retains an excellent overall quality. Very good job!
I'm pretty familiar with this area, so... it brings back good memories too.
Have a nice weekend, I'll see ya soon.

Hugs,
Fulvio.

That's the trouble with wildlife; they won't wait around while you set up your tripod. ;D There's supposed to be deer in our woods but we rarely see them. The fact these deer were still on the grass was fortunate as it makes an excellent background for their rust-coloured coats. Good one.

Bonjour, cher John,
Merveilleuse image où la nature nous laisse admirer ce couple de cervidés.
La beauté est parfaitement mise en valeur. Félicitations d'avoir pu obtenir un tel cliché !
Amitiés.
Philippe

Hi John
how lucky you are to have such a moment like this. For me is only a fantasy as we here have no forests and wild animals. How I wish sometime to see this lovely natural wondering place.
Excellent photo. My compliments
Regards
Charles

Hi John,
these beings are so beautiful and charming.
They look very calm near you!
Have a nice evening.

Hey John,

First of, your naturescape photos are wonderful. This one is no different, a superb composition, the deers produce a nice colors contrast to the green. A lot of details. Sharpened and focused very nicely, which I know isnt easy while capturing fast pacing wildlife.

See you around.

Hi John!
Tired of winter? The forest seems beautiful in summer, specially with the deer there and the wood on the ground. I like the light also.

Hello John,
you have many times captured wild life and allow us to introduce to fauna and flora of your country. I have to say for one more time how much I love those gentle creatures. Beautiful couple, indeed! Your photo is very good and ISO 200 a good choice, too.
Regards,
Athanasios.

Hello John,
It is always a pleasure to see wildlife in the natural surroundings!
Virgin forest where the trees die standing and not by the hands of loggers...
A well framed scenery with good details, a good ducumentary!
Greetings,
Pablo -

:-) OK-

Hi John,
Your note about thick woods and your Black Hills theme have changed forever my image of South Dakota. There is something about getting out in nature by oneself in the early morning that restores the equilibrium.

Thanks for your kind words in reponse to my tribute to my parents, I am truly blessed.
HLJ, Pat
