Overlooking Sylvan Lake

Sylvan Lake,
Custer State Park
the Black Hills of South Dakota

An image for our Thanksgiving Holiday ... Taken from the first day of my summer vacation ... we took our family and met my parents and brother at a cabin in the Black Hills ... one of my favorite places on Earth .. The day I shot this was the birthday of my mother and my older daughter ..

I got up and took an early morning walk around Sylvan Lake ..
Most images of this lake (such as the previous two I posted ... see my Black Hills Theme) .. are taken looking up at this stunning rock formation I resting upon in this image ..

In addition to this place the trail on the back side of Sylvan lake breaks off and ascends Harney Peak .. the highest point in the Black Hills.

To the Lakota (Sioux) the hills (or Paha Sapa) are a sacred place and Harney peak is the spiritual center ... The place of Black Elk's famous vision.

Hi!
Lovely place for holiday - nice to see while the wind and snow is roaring outside here...
The sea framed nicely by the tree and its branches. Perhaps a little dominating the one hanging down in top center?
Otherwise a good composition and colors.
TFS!
Best regards
Jon

What a beautiful landscape. It must be very peaceful and also an extraordinary place for a good retreat from the busy life we have today. The POV is excellent are the colours/light are superb. Well done.

Happy thanksgiving John. My friend invited me over and we had a some good food.

This is a very nice picture. I like the most the natural light that is available to you. It looks just enough. Beautiful as it is. A very pleasant one. Well done.

Hello John,
Beautiful POV.
Perfectly sharp, nice colours... I love it.

Hi John,
that a bit shadowed one has a good "hidden" effect. Nice composition looking through the rock and tree to the lake. Summer is back in our hearts here.

Bonjour John,
I wish you a very good week-end.
Daniel.

Yes John, this is how I remember it.
I've been resting too, upon this very rock formation a long time ago...
Wonderful POV, perfectly natural light and colors.
Awesome!

Hugs,
Fulvio.

Hi John,
Very peaceful landscape with the beautiful calm bay sheltered by the high rock formations. The blue water of the lake and the lighter blue of the sky contrast wonderfully with the evergreen forrest. Lovely gentle shadows in the foreground completes this relaxing summer photo.

Hi John,
A gorgeous POV over a breath taking scenery. The pine tree on the left make the rocks on the right a nice frame to the lake and the V shape on the FG acts like an "entrance" that invites our eyes to enter the image and peacefully enjoy its beauty. The colours and clarity are impressive; that still surface of the lake reflecting the intense blue of the sky and then mixing with the green of the forest... Wonderful! It's easy to understand why the natives consider the place sacred.
TFS, Regards, José.

Absolutely magnificent colours and a breathtaking view. I wish tovisit the place to get the feeling. Your gallery is full of natural beauty. You're very luck living in such a paradise.
Wishing you all the best to you & your son

Hello John,

This is indeed a wonderful place on the earth.
Water of the lake, and splendid area with a lot green, what a nice environment for take vacation, without a few tourists. Very well composition and colours.
Thanks for sharing.

Have a nice week,
John.

Hi John, What wonderful deep colours & a beautiful view, you have composed the photo well with the trunk of the tree to the left, a peaceful scene, I could imagine someone fishing in complete bliss here, kind regards Wilson.

John,
certainly a very beautiful place with a great framing using the tree in the foreground. the image seems a little bit to dark for my eyes but that is probably what makes the atmosphere of serenity so good in this shot.
I hope you're doing well!
Regards, Peter

Hi John!

Beautiful landscape, great POV, great "natural" framing and excellent composition. It's a little bit dark, but I always prefer photos to be darker than brighter. Excellent green and blue tones! Congratulations!
