Photographer’s Note

...."Homestead"....

A Simple Small Sign - BUT - OH!! the information contained within..

First - John Hanson ...."Homestead".... of 160 acres that started in 1890 is now
118 years old and has many thousands of acres. This Homestead is 60 miles
West of my home and most homesteads were started in my area in 1878 - 1880.
In addition this homestead is 20 South of Fort McPherson, you will remember in
my earlier images that it was established in the 1860's.

Second - John Hansen was a Cattleman - Horse Breeder - Farmer and Timber
producer (see images)

Third - If you look closely at the bottom framing iron - the legal description of the
property has been welded upon the flat iron. Anyone interested can look at the
Platte Map and know the exact location of the original Homestead.

Fourth - This sign is on the South border of the Ranch (see the fence line) - a
duplicate sign is north of here several miles and shows the North border of the
property.

Fifth - Once Homesteading began the saying "Good Fences Make Good
Neighbors" became very true. You can see the fence is well maintained.
Many Ranch's employee crews who's only responsibility is fence maintenance
and most of the work is done from riding horses to survey the fences.

Sixth - The sign is intentionally open in nature - so you can look through
the sign - John Hansen's property extends as far as the eye can see on this
very clear day.

As you now know this simple small sign tells a very large story!!

An another vew of the rural life in USA. A very orginal framing whith the metal pannel; this framing gives a great depth of field.

Yes, it's a simple small sign, but much of the small farm town USA essence is captured in this image. Good framed by natural surrounding. Love the clear blue and green of the earth. A natural beauty with handy work of art. Very good detail and texture of the iron work. Well seen and presented. Thanks.

Hello Larry,

A very nice story almost 120 year ago, this is in Belgium not possible so great farm, only in America and Canada find one so big farms.
You live in a wonderful area, pleasant for young people.
I find your picture very interesting with this nameplate as subject, very well presentation, nice sharpness and clarity

Hello Larry,

I suppose you know that Johannes (John) Peter Hansen was born in Sleswig, Germany!
I got a bit curious since he had a very Norwegian name and did some research, hehehe...
This is a fine documentary photograph, in particular the vast plains behind the sign are stunning!
