Photographer’s Note

...."Old Planter"....

This is a very early (one of the first) tractor pulled corn planters (actually
known as a Lister). The long arm extending toward the front, above the
tongue, is used to control the depth of planting from the tractor seat.
Right behind the steel wheels you see the furrow openers (plow bottoms)
that dig the furrow for the corn seed to go into. Behind those you see a
cylinder that holds the seed and has a plate in the bottom that rotates as
one drives forward and drops the seed corn in the furrow. Behind that you
see the disc closers, these push the dirt in over the corn to complete
the process.

The stone, with ranch name, behind the corn planter is Kansas Lime
Stone (from the north of the State of Kansas) used by Pioneers for
their homes, corners for cattle pasture fences and even sometimes
line post. It is a popular decorative item used to identify ranch's or farms
and sometime as a yard ornament to identify you favorite football team..

Hello Larry,

I have this type old planter never seen here in Belgium, you gives a very good note, I can understand what you write.
You show us these old planter on a very good manner, we see almost the totally mechanism.
Light and sharpness are very well, nice detailed too.

A great shot that includes the stonework in the BG. Good notes as well. I think I would have applied levels to see if I could tone down the brightness a bit and give a little more contrast.

Larry,
Good info on this planter/lister. Good photo with good clarity and sharpness. color and light well managed. I understand that you like to include the sign of Abrahanson in the image, however maybe not directly on the back of the planter, it's kind of confusing, It look as if it was part of the planter, and half cover up by the planter. I would perhaps walk around to the left to get more of the profile and make sure that the pole of the sign is not is not direction behind something that may lead your view to think it part of the object. Be patient when photographing, walk around for a better POV, or take a few different shots form many different locations, take some standing up, some sitting down, you will eventually figure out which is best and delete what you don't want.

hi larry.
only one small problem for me on this one. i find the colours are not as deep as normal. i have done a ws to show you what i mean.
apart from that there is nothing that i can see that i don't like. it tells a story of the past.
you are a mater storyteller with these old machines.

Always interesting to see old tools and machinery, trying to figure out how they worked..!
The colour of rust in sunshine is always attractive and even more so on the background of the green lawn...

Hi Larry,
Them were the days my friend.
Your collection is a fine representation of life on the Great Plains and the grit in those who settled there. It is a wonder that the farmers could not turn it in for scrap medal. I guess that the U.S. had so much iron ore in those days it was not practical thus we have this fine rusty old image.
