Photographer’s Note

This is another of our favorite places of St. Louis. We are generally not fond of restaurant chains or any other sort of chain, even hotels (well, I'm kind of partial to the Fairmont chain of hotels as you may have seen in my gallery), but this one is an exception. It is the Westin Hotel in downtown St. Louis, right across the street from the Cardinals Baseball (Busch) Stadium. We usually find our way in there before a baseball game for a few beers at the bar and some appetizers and have gone for their Sunday breakfast more than a few times. It's a pleasant place to go, the prices are not too bad (as compared to those of the stadium) and the food is good and the beer cold.

I shot this the same day as my "Springtime at Busch Stadium" compositional faux pas, only this was exactly an hour earlier in the evening. The light from the sun was at a perfect angle to stream in the windows behind some gauzy curtains, it cast a strange light on the inside of the place. I tried to capture that light with this photo. It looked best as it was coming through the curtains behind the liquor bottles and glassware, but that part alone wasn't very interesting so I included the bartender and a customer to balance it out with a human element. Even though I cut off the bartender's feet, I still like the shot for the light. Had I brought my Sigma I could have gotten more in, but I was going to be sitting in the nose-bleed seats, and I only had room in my jacket pockets for one extra lens (70-300mm), a polarizer, extra battery and LensPen in case I touched the lens when changing them.

So, that's it for today. I'm kind of going backwards a few days - I have a bunch of nice shots from the past couple weeks!

Have a great Thursday!
