Photographer’s Note
This is an early evening shot from a place we call "Delmar Loop" - it is located in University City, Missouri. It is a college area (well, yeah, University City) and has about 6 or more blocks of restaurants and entertainment venues. Most recently there has been the addition of an actual hotel - the Moonrise Hotel, which has "luxury boutique lodging accommodations on Delmar in The Loop near downtown St Louis Missouri." If you had seen this area, this particular block, ten or fifteen years ago, you would see the difference is like night and day. This transformation cannot be attributed to our St. Louis politicians, but to a man named Joe Edwards. He is the owner and proprietor of Blueberry Hill and other fine establishments in the Loop, including the Pin-Up Bowl that is on the left in this image, and the Pageant Theatre - you can see that at the end of the block there. He also started the St. Louis Walk of Fame, which is a series of stars embedded in the sidewalk on the Loop, showcasing the local celebrity such as Kevin Kline, Dizzy Dean and Maya Angelou.
This area is in sharp contrast to our Downtown St. Louis area, which has buildings in plain view of all tourists like I posted yesterday. Sure, they have the Cardinals Baseball team, the Blues Hockey team, the Rams football team all playing downtown, but we still get a bad name because of sights like yesterday's image.
I took this Saturday night, shortly after sunset, unfortunately the blue hour has passed. I had a hard time deciding to post this nocturnal image or the one with the golden sunset light. When flipping between them I decided this one had more "pop" and I can post the other in the workshop for everyone to see. I will also post a shot of the "Pin-Up Bowl" so you can get a look at the neon art on that one, too.
Let me know if you think I should have posted the sunset shot here, or if you think this one is better.
Thanks for looking!

Hi Reed,
I'm surprised you didn't get any reactions to this one yet. Actually, you should get smilies just for the post with the most links... ;o)
I'm having a hard time deciding which of the shots I like better. They both have their special charm - the sunset one looks a lot warmer of course, but this one has a more interesting atmosphere. Can I just say I like both?
I think the vertical composition works perfectly here and the horizontal one is best for the sunset shot as it shows more of the golden light on the sidewalk etc. Anyway, great light management and colours, perfect frame, too.
Happy Easter, and all the best,
Claudia
PS: You can tell your friend Kevin that I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the Blues! ;o)

Hi Reed, this looks a little fuzzy on the thumbnail, but up close, it's beautifully sharp. I like your use of the vertical framing, and great control of shutter speed, for a sharp image yet "people blur". Personally, I like them all but prefer the night shot. Each of them on their own are worthy of a "post" though Reed. Have a wonderful long weekend and will see you round soon, Lisa.

Hi Reed,
There's something very American on those advertising lights. Sometimes I feel there should be more of such in Europe too, sometimes it looks a bit too much. Colourful nighttime view, strong perspective.

Hello Reed,
I like this shot a lot, the exposure is great and the composition first class. Your workshop wide shot during sunset works well too but I think you've made the right choice going with this one.
Really good colour rendition and of course, sharp as a tack.
I've always had a soft spot for this type of fifties neon work. Good use of the frame as well, the electric blue border looks terrific and compliments the image.
Well done.
Cheers
Pete
