"...the cave was but a labyrinth of crooked aisles that ran into each other and out again and led nowhere. It was said that one might wander days and nights together through its intricate tangle of rifts and chasms and never find the end of the cave."
Mark Twain
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
This image was taken inside the Mark Twain Cave located just outside of Hannibal, Missouri. I believe that this is the place called "Alladin's Palace" by Mark Twain (see the end of chapter 33 of 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer').
This cave was discovered in the winter of 1819-1820 by a man named Jack Sims. He was out hunting and his dog chased an animal into a small opening. Although the cave has served as a hiding place for Indians, Fur Trappers, Highway Men (including the notorious Jesse James), and Negro Slaves searching for freedom, it was a young man named Samuel Clemens who gave it the fame that it wtill holds to this very day. This is the oldest show cave in the state of Missouri.
The image was captured in jpeg using aperture priority at ISO 1600. I shot it handheld, without the use of a tripod. I don't remember much about it (it was taken almost a year ago) other than the rest of the tour group had walked on ahead, leaving me with the thoughts of Tom, Becky, & Injun Joe. Did I mention that being in a dark cave is a little spooky? |

Great composition! The lighting is very interesting: are there hidden bulbs along the path?
You've done a great job of capturing such texture, depth, and color in such a difficult setting (I've tried taking photos inside one of these lit underground caves and it is NOT easy). Great POV and detail! -Lara
Hi Robert,
Your picture is very nice and colourful. I like the bright colours of the lights inside the cave. This place looks very interesting. Good sharpness too.
Cheers :-)

Robert~
Great cave shot! I went caving last month and tried to take a couple of shots but I was unsuccessful. They turned out either fuzzy, overexposed or too dark. Very well done!
