Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge ver. 2

This is the second version of the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge at Cape Girardeau, Missouri over the Mississippi River taken about three months later when I finally got down there with my DSLR and a tripod. Here is the first one:

In this photo, the Mississippi River was above flood stage, which in Cape is 32 ft (9.75 m). In this particular photo, it was probably about 35 ft (10.66 m). Had I taken this photo in the exact same spot as the previous one, I would be under water.
The river has pretty much been above flood stage since we got over 13 inches (33 cm) of rain on March 18, and let's just say that much rain caused some serious flooding throughout the area and blew away the previous 24-hour record. The city of Cape itself didn't sustain flooding from the Mississippi river so much as flash flooding from creeks clogged with debris from the February ice storms (which happened a few days after the first photo was taken). Cape Girardeau has been protected by a flood wall since 1964 and it has dramatically helped the downtown area. After March 18, the river crested around 42 ft (12.8 m). Needless to say, the floodgates were all closed and this location was underwater as well. Some areas hardest hit (near Cape) by that flood were mostly farmland in Illinois and areas south of Cape Girardeau. Many of those areas are still underwater two months later even though much of the floodwater has receded; it has nowhere to go.
Anyway, the streak of orange light on the left is the light from a barge going downstream (pretty quickly, too) during this 30-second exposure. |

Nice shot. The action on the right hand side is somewhat distracting.
I like the colors you were able to get for this night shot.
Good job!
