The Kettle River in Banning State Park, Minnesota. The river is tinted amber from swamp drainage. One of the best white water rivers in the North Central part of the US. Most of the river is Class I during low water with some stretches reaching II or III in high water. The dramatic Banning Rapids area ranges in difficulty from Class II-IV at all water levels. The width varies from 30-250 feet.

The Kettle River extends the entire length of the park, exposing bedrock for much of the distance. One of the most dominant characteristics of the park is the sandstone and potholes formed by the Kettle River. In the northern area of the park, the river flows through a relatively shallow and narrow valley. Within a few miles, the river valley narrows to a gorge worn by the river through Precambrian sandstone to a depth of 100 feet. At Hell's Gate, the river flows through sheer cliffs which rise to 40 feet above the water. Below the rapids, the valley once again begins to widen. Beyond the valley walls, the topography is generally level to gently rolling glacial till plain.

Banning State Park consists of 5877 acres of land. Original vegetations were primarily of Norway & white pines, interspersed with aspen & birch. Today, as a result of logging & forest fires, vegetation communities are dominated by aspen & birch.

Scanned from film. Cleaned & adjusted with PS CS2. Most difficult part was to clean the sky. A lot of noise, dust, and scratch marks. Photo shot in the summer of 1983.

Hi Latiff,

you have captured the feeling of power and width of the river .. the thickness of the Minnesota woods .. It may not be a technically correct thought .. but I think would like this darker a nudge .. a bit more ominous or some such thing .. very nice, especially considering the age.

take care,

John

Hola Latiff,
Bella captura de ese río enseñándonos toda su fuerza, quizás podías haber suavizado el cielo para quitarle el ruido, o tal vez lo has dejado a propósito...
En cualquier caso una estupenda foto con mucha profundidad.
Cordialmente
Charo

Hello Latiff.
I like the low viewpoint you have selected here; it emphasises the speed of flow of the river. Excellent depth, heightened by the framing at bottom, and very good colours and clarity.

Hi Latiff,
Great natural photo, I like the picturesque soft colours and lights, its so than an impressionist painting. Details are very fine, composition is excellent. Romantic and timeless impression, Great! Have a nice weekend
George

Hi Latiff,
Pretty good quality for a scanned image. This river must be a good fishing spot considering a swamp drains here which normally carries a lot of fish food. With such powerful river, what a pity it is not being harness for electricity. Anyway, well captured and composed. Well done! tfs
Cheers,
Renier

Hi Latiff,
So this is a great restoration job!
It's incredible the 24 years wait of this picture to reach our eyes.
I like so much the composition made and the move of the river's flow.
Did you try to increase the saturation on PP?
Well done and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM
