Textures of a Winter Thicket
Duluth, Minnesota
Fresh snow envelops a thicket in the woods that flow through Duluth Minnesota.
I debated about posting this image for a while. I am not sure the 800 pixel size allows it to communicate as well as I would like. I think it is much more effective larger. If you would like to view it at a larger size take a moment to drop by my site
Enter the site .. go to galleries .. it is the lead picture in recent additions at the moment (it is also somewhere in the winter gallery as well .. where it will stay after it leaves the recent additions).
Of course you may find that larger you find it even more annoying and have managed to waist five more minutes of your life surfing around the web.
This is from one of my walks thought the woods that flow through the neighborhood where we live.
This particular place is near a pond surrounded by acres of empty forest. Like may public lands in Duluth this tract has no name .. no indication on maps ... just several small paths leading from the street side or from the backyards of the residents. The only indication that the area is public are the small city signs proclaiming that motorized vehicles are not allowed on the path. Such areas are common in Duluth in the hills and gullies that lead down to Lake Superior.
It was a balmy a balmy 14ºF (-10ºC) when I shot this with a fresh coating of a couple inches of new snow.
It was a prelude to the last couple days .. We were blasted with 10 inches (25 cm) of snow on Sunday .. and then blasted by the arctic .. It was -22ºF (-30ºC) with a wind chill down to -38ºF (-39ºC) when we walked our daughters down to the corner to meet the school bus this morning .. It is supposed to be even colder and with more snow by the end of the week .. brrr ... we will see if I am brave enough to take my camera out in it.

Hello John,
Splendid textures on frozen tree branches. You already had cold winter weather but we already forget it. Almost sunset time (18:30) now but the temperature will not drop under 25ºC (77ºF) even during all night. You captured a fantastic texture, congratulations. Take care.
Friendly Regards,
Ertugrul

Aucun doute sur la saison John,
un patchwork très parlant, une manière un peu abstraite de rendre hommage à cette saison froide mais si jolie dans certains coins du monde.
Bravo pour cette approche personnelle.
Best regards, have a great day.
Daniel.

Hallo John!
An at the first glance really confusing picture - but at the second glance one feels cold here. What an interesting and somehow even beautiful natural pattern! Well seen!
Greetings from cold but rainy Germany - with clear ice!

Seasons greetings John. I did have a quick look in your web site, very nice! And yes the larger size does come across better with the patterns more discernable and better contrasts.
Hope you and yours have a great Xmas, Paul.

Bonjour,
Belle prise, bon partage, merci.
Rosa et toto vous souhaites de bonne fêtes de fin d' année et une merveilleuse année 2009, qu' elle vous apporte bonheur, argent et santé(+ de belles photo bien sur)

John,
Wow, there is no composition to speak about, but just impressive details and texture of the snow covered tree branches. I really like the patterns of thing that is formed by mother nature, so beautiful and natural. Off course you photographed well that make the difference and thanks for your keen observation. Thanks for sharing.

Hi John - it's very graphic picture of nature - only two colors - only two things (shrubberies and snow) - our life it is colorful - but - white and black - they are colors too..
Best regards,
Tomek
