The Location

Taken at Silver Lake State Park in Silver Lake, Michigan. The park contains a large area of dunes that extends for roughly 8 square kilometers. The dunes themselves are sectioned into a walking area and an area specifically designated for off road vehicle use. My father tells me that these dunes completely overtook an entire house back in the 1970s. In walking through the barren landscape the old forested areas that it covered are quite evident as you see here in this gnarled old root system.

The Image

The weird driftwood shapes set against the soft tones of the dunes at twilight are what inspired me to make this image. The hardest part was evaluating a location at a distance and from all angles to find a composition without screwing it up with my own footprints. You can't hide a thing in these dunes and one wrong judgment and you've blown a bunch of potential shots.

I also used a 2-stop grad on the sky. Hope you like it.

Hats off to Graeme Dickson (geester) who spotted that this was HDR. It is a combination of three exposures - one over and one under the meter reading. I worked hard to make it as invisible as possible but Graeme spotted it.

Cheers!

Bob G.

hi Bob,
I like a lot how smooth the sand looks, like a silk almost. and that's a great contrast with the sharp branches of the driftwood. fantastic pastel colours, there's something very soothing and calming in this shot despite the title and the painfully twisted tree. excellent work, my compliments.

with best regards,
Kristine

Great image quality - sharp and spiky, how accurate for the main object here ;-) Nice proportions between the sand and the sky. Natural colours, not oversaturated like some shots on TE. I like it!

Hello Bob,
A lovely image of this odd and ever-moving environment. The colour and tones are splendid, as is the definition in the sand ripples. It's an interesting composition, with this weird looking piece of wood up close, but it works exceptionally well.

All the best, Casper

Hi Bob,
very nice image, the foreground is just perfect in that desert!
regards,didier

Olá Bob,

Very good shot captured with a great point of view, your composition is magnificent with the dune and the "dead forest" in a nice contrast with the sky.
Well done.
TFS.
Best regards,
Filipe

Dear Bob,
Wonderfull shot!
Sharpness is really impressive!
What's the reason of your 2 seconds exposure as it's a static environment ?
Thanks for sharing,
- Olivier -

Hi VBOb,
An extremely beautiful view on this dead area.
The result is almost monochromic. Splendid sky and very well composed. Good use of your wide angle lens.
Regards from Belgium.
Eddie

Great eye to spot this interesting subject, Bob. The diffuse light works well for you. The colorful sky makes a great background, but the twisted piece of driftwood is really the star of the shot.

Bob
Beauty is all around us, and you just know where to look for it and captured it so perfectly with great composition. Great presentation here. Pefect sharpness on the foreground of the main subject and softer background with wonderful colors of the sunset. Thanks so much.

Bonsoir,

Hello Bob,a beautiful composition of the dunes with the perfectly placed driftwood. There is a good contrast between the smoothness of the sand and the jagged edges of the wood.
The sunset is a bonus.
Tfs, regards Jean.

Outstanding angle and quality. Beautiful details and colors.

Hello Bob,

Les arbres ont dû souffrir dans cette région avant de mourir de déssechement.
Une vue au grand anle qui rend bien la grandeur et l'étendue de la désolation.
J'aime beaucoup l'effet de la longue pose sur le ciel !
Bravo !

Excellent shot Bob - great definition of the driftwood. Now I'm new to all this Trekearth stuff, but something about this image is bugging me. Did you use HDR?

Well done

Hi Bob.

Superb picture where the vertical view and the way you managed the light are amazing.

Well done.

Hi Bob, I've seen plenty of cartoonish HDR images and decided that it was a useless gimic. Here you show otherwise. I certainly couldn't have spotted it. Great choice of location to shoot from, with the interesting old tree roots and the other elements in the sand drawing the eye to the sunset. cheers, Steve

Very impressive subject, it looks like a desert ;)
That driftwood is superb and full of details, the sky is well exposed thanks to the HDR, great composition well compartimentalised to have a clear foreground & background that blend very well thematically.
The portrait carries a quiet sense of sorrow, in line with the pastels of the sky.

Hi Bob,
it' s incredible as a dead nature can print as much life and forces to an image, really impressive! excellent depth through the white sand until touching the sky. Great calmed and relaxed atmosphere created by the suggestive tonalities. A photography to admire....

Jordi

une belle série que je découvre avec la n°3 mais c'est celle-ci ma préférée; cette racine s'ouvre comme une fleur éclose; très belle composition, douces couleurs... simplement belle
