The Location

A typical view along Lake Michigan in Manistee County, Michigan. This is just off the road near Bar Lake between Onekema and Manistee. The name of Lake Michigan is thought to have been derived from an Ojibwa word Mishigami which means "Great Water". Of the 5 great lakes it is the only one entirely contained within the US and is roughly 60 miles across at the narrowest point. During calm weather the beaches along these shores are lined with pristine white sand and softly lapping waves. I remember a lot more drift wood being around when I was a kid but it has apparently been picked clean to support the tourist demand.

The Image

On my rare visits home I love to spend evenings just sitting, watching and listening along these shores. This is not a rugged English coastline or turbulent seascape - at least not in this section. Foreground interest is hard to come by so I thought that it required a little different, perhaps softer, approach. I deliberately went a little high-key here with the long exposure during twilight. I was thrilled to see a small rock wash ashore and scurried to get it into the composition before it was washed back out by the rip tide. I wanted to get the best focus I could on the rock and the texture of the sand in particular. I experimented with alternate variations of this scene both freezing the water and allowing it to blur but for me this version best represents the mood of the place.

Hope you like it.

I also used a 2-stop grad.

Cheers!

Bob G.

Hi Bob!
Great capture, very technical. I appreciate your explanation as I´m always learning.
Great contrast and colours, stone gives a very interesting point to the picture.
Thank you for sharing.
Best Regards.
Manuel

Hi Bob,

Simple, but beautiful. I wonder, would it be cheating if we carried a rock around with us all the time 'just in case':-) Could be a great topic starter tomorrow.
How many more can we expect from Michigan?
Well done
Graeme

Hi Bob,
a very sensible portrait of this shoreline... first I thought you certainly put the stone there... :)
Compliments, an excellent one. Christian

Hi Bob - Wow! I wouldn't have guessed that was michigan!! I have family in the midwest so I always think of it as farms and fields :) I forget about the lakes! Honestly if you had labelled this the east or west coast... or even the caribbean, I wouldn't have blinked. I liked the fact that you went high key and we've got these lovely relaxing pale pastel tones in the image. I really appreciate the diagonal shore line through the image as well. Hope you had a good trip home! Rgds, Leilani

Excellent POV and hues. A minimalistic gem.

Hello Bob,

La composition est des plus simples mais fonctionne bien. Cette pierre en avant plan est très petite mais habille parfaitement l'image pour l'équilibrer !
Un cadrage parfait pour une image tout en douceur.

A+

Hi Bob,
So simple, but so wonderful ! The lonely stone on the sand, the misty effect on the water, the pastel colours of the sky, all of this creates a great atmosphere. I really love it !

Olivier

Very nice poetic view, the soft pastel colors are very interesting, and the lone rock make for a great foreground.

Bob,
I love the simple image with so much tranquility. Everything is so soft, nothing harsh about it, but still very good clarity. Beautiful light and colors, adaquately saturated and contrast, very natural and not overly processed. Thanks
Way
