The Location

This is the North Pierhead Lighthouse at 5th Avenue Beach in Manistee, Michigan. The original light was built in 1873 along with another on the South Pierhead but this current tower replaced the decaying earlier structure in 1927. The body of water is of course Lake Michigan. I don't know who the fisherman is but in my mind's eye it is me at age 12 and I've never left ;)

The Image

This is the first occasion I have tried viewing my hometown with a photographer's eye (albeit mine) and I started with the most notable, iconic view of the place. I grew up here and spent many, many hours of my youth either jumping from this pier into the cold waters of Lake Michigan during the summer months or fishing from it (Salmon and Trout mostly) well past sunset in spring and fall. This image brings it all back for me.

Cheers!

Bob G.

Bonjour Bob
Wow!!!Une photo que j'aurais aimé faire!J'adore le sujet, la lumière et les couleurs sont splendides et l'inclusion du pecheur en ombre chinoise, bravo à toi je suis fan!
Eric

Hi Bob
Stunning sunset with the huge ball just above the fishermans' head. The vertical framing is the good choice to show of the lighthouse. I love the smooth orange tones of the sky.
Regards
Nikki

Hi Bob,

Your timing is perfect while catching beautiful silhouettes of lighthouse and lonely fisherman. Reddish colors by splendid sunset lights makes your photo an attractive one. Excellent clarity and tones of reds. Congratulations.

Best Regards,

Hi Bob,
spectacular image of reddish tonalities right at the moment at which the sun is of retirement. The dark silhouettes of the light and the fisherman print the necessary contrast in the beautiful scene. And the sun .......is fantastic and suggestive!! My admiration Bob ,

with best regards,

Jordi

Welcome back Bob. I see you've been busy on holiday. I've been experimenting with sunsets recently and just cannot get them anywhere near as good as this one. Cracking job mate. A simple composition but getting the right exposure looks difficult to me. Great shot:-))))))

Hello Bob,

Quel spectacle ! On ne peut qu'admirer ce coucher de soleil à la composition parfaite !
La présence de ce pêcheur dans le soleil est un coup de maître !
Bravo ! Une très belle image !

Hi Bob,

Wonderful!! So relaxed this view with the sun and the strong silouette. This is surely work with which you need a tripod and your ND Grad filters. But even when having those, you need to have a good eye as well and as it seems you do have that as well. Congratulations!

Greetings,
Dennis

Hey Bob,
An excellent shot of this lighthouse at sunset. The warm colors of the sky are perfect. A truly perfect composition. Congratulations!!!
Greetings,
Natasha

Hi Bob,
A classic scene, but everytime a joy for the eye. Your 5D in combination with that strange but very good piece of glass brought you an excellent picture. Never thought a Lee ND would also work here, but the result is really great.
Very impressive ont he composition and the colours where the man fishing is an extra bonus as great focalpoint.
Regards, Henk

Hi Bob,
Superb colors of the setting sun, with the sun looking absolutely beautiful behind the hint of clouds. The composition, the sharpness look superb.
Best regards. Salvator.

Hi Bob,

This is a lovely image with the fisherman as the 'piece de resistance'. When you live in a place for a long time, you never fully appreciate its beauty until you make a return visit!

regards
Lindsay

Hi Bob,
WOW! What a stunning shot this is! There are so many elements in this shot that are spectacular..the setting sun, the warm tones, the man fishing, the lighthouse..i can go on and on. The ND filter made you get the right exposure for all of them. Everything is PERFECT! Goes to my favs.
Thanks for sharing.

Hola Bob,
it seems to me an image very suggestive and over to interpretations very varied. The sky is beautiful and the sun taking leave of the day protected by those tonalities is a jewel. Great contrast with the light and the fisherman in dark color.

Have a nice day,

Maite

Words were wiped out!

Hi Bob,
I know it`s an old one, but I had to write you because I also visited this place when I was there in August, this exact same lighthouse, but I wasn`t there during sunset. It`s great that you returned to your hometwon and photographed it after such a long time. It`s always difficult to photograph these common places, I`ve seen that it`s much easier for me to photograph unknown places because you often overlook the interesting motives when shooting in common areas, it`s just to... common ;-)
But you did great here, no need to say that the technically side is perfect. Your composition is also absolutely great, you got it much bigger in the frame than I did when I was there, I only had that 70-200mm with me, a great lens when it comes to quality, but sometimes I wish Canon would have built that 70-300mm as a L one.

By the way, thanks again for your useful tips, did you get my "thank-you-mail"? Next time I return to Michigan I try to get such an image.

Take care
Mark
