Photographer’s Note

Another shot taken from Pictured Rocks National Shoreline. Most of the best shots simply cannot be gotten from land. You have to book a tour or rent a boat. The tours are reasonable and less risky. Don't let the word lake fool you. Lake Superior is huge and can get very choppy from wind alone. The swells knocked me to my knees more than once. Wear a jacket, even in summer, and hold onto a rail if you are standing.

If you look closely, you will notices roots stretching from the pillar of rock to the cliff side. I suspect the tree's root structure is the only reason the pillar has not crumbled with the rest of the cliff.
