Photographer’s Note

My previous photo of the Mackinac Bridge was taken from an unconventional angle: underneath. This shot is a much more typical view of the bridge, although the environment is not. It was just after sunset and very foggy when I took this shot. There was a strange green glow in the air. It was very mystical and strange, and it was one of the better views of the bridge that I've seen.

The Mackinac Bridge was built in 1957 after years of discussions concerning replacing the overused ferry system to connect Michigan's two peninsulas. At the time of the bridge's opening it was the longest suspension bridge in the world with a span of 26,372 feet (8,038 m, or approximately 5 miles) between anchorages and a central span of 3,800 feet (1,158 m). The total weight of the bridge is 1,024,500 tons. After all these years, the massive bridge remains the longest suspension bridge in the USA and the third longest in the world.
