Photographer’s Note
This is the magnificent view of Isle Royale and its surrounding environs from Lookout Louise, a high lookout about 800 feet above the cold waters of Lake Superior. The large areas of land and small islands that can be seen in the foreground are parts of the fragmented island of Isle Royale. Thunder Bay, Canada can be seen in the far distance covered in blue haze. The Canadian shoreline has high cliffs, the largest of which, called The Sleeping Giant, can be seen straight ahead.
Isle Royale National Park includes Isle Royale and all of the hundreds of surrounding islands that lie in the vast and mysterious Lake Superior. It is an absolutely pristine wilderness area and has been left mostly untouched since the arrival of Indians here thousands of years ago. Some of the oldest mine pits in North America, dating back thousands of years, can be found on the Isle. The Isle is incredibly rocky and the trees, ground and boulders are all covered with strange mosses and lichens. A vast array of wildlife lives on the Isle, most notably hundreds of moose and a huge pack of wolves.
Isle Royale is part of the territory of the U.S. state of Michigan, although it lies only 30 miles from Canada. One can reach the island by ferry or seaplane, which both depart from Houghton, Michigan, in the Upper Peninsula.
This qualifies for the scavenger hunt "The Impossible Hunt" under the "Country Border" category.
