[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Second in a short series of Mushroom Rocks. First one was posted yesterday.

Mushroom Rock State Park is located in Ellsworth County and is the smallest state park in Kansas, only 5 acres of land making up the entire park. However, what it lacks in size is more than made up in historical and geological significance. The mushroom-shaped rocks were created by the erosion of softer dirt and sandstone under the heavier and harder rock above. The mushroom rocks were a major landmark for pioneers taveling the Fremont Trail in the 1800's and were a favorite meeting spot for Indians.

The town of Carniero is the closest community to the park. Mushroom Rock State Park is on Avenue K (a gravel road), about a mile due south of Carniero and approximately 25 miles west-southwest of Salina.

Very interesting place. This is a very interesting composition as well. I like it. The low side lighting is highlighting the "mushroom" very nicely. Are the dark spots in the sky above the rock birds, or dust on from your sensor? Either way I would have cloned them out.
Take care,
Ryan

Those are very strange formations. I did a little geology study in college and we understood what made formations like this but these are different, I'll have to study on it a little more. I liked the perspective, the other rock in the photo gives a sense of size and your light is very good. So what's the story on Spearman, TX? Did you get my email that I had lived there?

Etonnant champignon minéral! Une structure géologique peu courante et très intéressante.
Amicalement

Hi Gregory,

At first sight I thought this mushroom rock was man made. Reading the photographer's name tells a different story where Indians secret societies held their meetings before starting their scalping activities...

Great color, unusual and odd...
