This is another evening shot of Clear Lake. Clear Lake is a recreational lake in north-central Iowa near the Minnesota border. It is entirely spring fed and sits approximately 100 feet above the surrounding plains covered in fields of corn.

This was a quiet time on the lake. The only sound was the gulping sound of the gentle waves breaking on the concrete wall along the shore. It was a cool evening around supper time so everyone had their boats back at dock and were probably eating or preparing to go out for a Friday night. The downtown of Clear Lake can just barely be made out on the horizon with its water tower.

You can read more information about the lake and see a panorama of the entire lake in my earlier photo, Evening on the Lake.

Kaj had noted the boats out of the water in that shot. I had not thought of it until he mentioned it but it was strange to hear the boats hoisted out of the water every time they came in. It was an interesting curiosity, though. I'm more familiar with the Great Lakes around my home and boats that are just a bit too large to pull out of the water every evening.

So I asked my aunt the answer was simply that it is done to avoid damaged. Because the boats are small they would toss in the wind into these fragile docks, potentially damaging both. I can imagine the speed of the wind can become quite high and sustained at that speed. Iowa is, as many other plains states, one of the windiest states in the country. And only a few miles on the other side of the lake is the
Cerro Gordo Wind Farm, proof that the winds can stay at moderately high sustained speeds for long periods of time, blowing west to east across the long, flat, surface of the lake.

Beautiful shot, Paul - the light is lovely and the colours are great, with that dark red setting off all the blue very nicely. I'd crop the tree at the top - I don't think it's substantial enough to add anything to the shot which stands very well on its own.

The return of the red pier. :) As your latest panorama, I find that the pier contrasts greatly with water. The mix between the reflection and waves in foreground is also beautiful like if the waves bring the reflection on the bank.

Very colorful photo Paul, nice diagonal and good framing, very sharp, well seen and done.

A very beautiful shot, Paul. The blue of the water and the sky are perfect. It is interesting to see the boats lifted out of the water like that, and with their 'sun' covers too. I like the clarity and detail of the pier in the foreground. Well framed.

De bien belles couleurs , joli moment de calme aprés l'effort le reconfort. Joli ensemble Paul.

Calme et quietude une belle fin de saison peut-être. De belles couleurs.Bravo.

This is beautiful even a second time around Paul, in this more conventional format. I recall pondering the question whether one of the joints between two photos of the earlier panorama ran through the dock near the left edge of this image where it abruptly rises. Now I see my mistake... ;-) The rise in the dock appears simply to bring it in alignment with the shore.

Colors and details are very fine here. The image is a delight to a midwestern boy, as I said before. If my aunt lived by that particular lake, I'd surely be visiting it as well. Thanks for the excellent note and fine image.

Beautiful composition and great colours. The note is very useful. I can see the wind in action because the water of lake in background is rippled. I hope that the weight of boats is light!

Another nice shot from this unusual lake, Paul. Although living in quite a windy part of Sweden myself, I didn't think of that obvious explanation. (The roofs indicated a lot of rain and the hoisting could be to avoid heavy alga or mollusc attacks...:D) Of course there's often a strong wind across the plains - thanks for finding out the reality. It's hard to believe, while this picture - as well as your previous - is very peaceful. Everything is resting and it's almost possible to hear the gulping sound. Well done - and thanks!
