Criss-Cross Atrium Photo

Photographer’s Note

This is the interior atrium of the Foreign Languages Building on the University of Illinois campus. I'm looking out from a top floor glass door, but the glass has a metal grid inside.

The building is fascinating: it is built in the shape of an inverted pyramid or "Tower of Babel" because this is the place where all the languages come together and become comprehensible (or at least, that is the idea!). So the bottom floor is the narrowest and the successive floors above it get larger and wider. I spent 9 happy years studying and teaching in this building.

I like the gradient effect created by including the gridlines on the glass. Somehow the complete image has a retro-futuristic effect - if that makes sense. It reminds me of a set from one of those sci-fi movies from the 70s (like 2001 or Andromeda Strain).

Hola, Heriberto. Te escribo para decirte que ya te he hecho un WS a tu foto de la catedral de Toledo.
De paso he estado mirando tus fotos y, entre otras me ha gustado esta.
Me ha gustado mucho este edificio tan moderno y la idea de que este construido cómo un zigurat (torre de Babel) invertido. Parece que es una buena analogía.
No se si la foto te hubiera quedado mejor habiéndola hecho completamente de frente al cristal para que ambos lados quedaran simétricos. Quizás de haberlo intentado así, te hubieran salido reflejos no deseados.
La rejilla de la puerta le da un toque especial a la foto. Quizás hubiera quedado mejor con algo más de enfoque o contraste sobre ella, pero sólo es una opinión de la que no estoy muy seguro. Saludos, Clemente.
