The 'L' (El; elevated)is the local name for the wonderful rapid transit railway system in Chicago. It is not all elevated and indeed parts pass through tunnels. The oldest sections date from 1892. Pavements (sidewalks) and roads criss-cross underneath and when a train passes over the old railway structures there is a wonderful feeling of 'old Chicago'. I think that the section that I photographed is in South Wabash Avenue which is a walk south of the main downtown area.

I´ll just say-I love it!!!
The "L"is Chicago and it captures and conveys so well the spirit and character of this great city.
I enjoy it also in B&W,whcih in my opinion makes the scene more "atmospheric".
Would love to visit Chicago again!
Have a nice day

To me, it would not have mattered whether your shot was in b&w or colour for it is the amazing 'L' shape capture that hits the consciousness. It is a beautifully constructed shot, full of shapes and textures, a précis of (relatively) modern construction. And, to add to this, you have timed it remarkably, so that the train is perfectly placed in the frame.
A real work of art!
Have a great day,

Very nice photo with impressive POV, I like this railway and the skyscraper as the BG. Great diagonal composition, excellent photo

Very strong image of a modern city imaginatively framed, I keep looking at this photo and it bowls me over! Indeed an astounding view of the sprawling mass of building as massive as impressive seen from low point of view. A strong graphical effect using the already established patterns, shapes and structure. The vertical lines emphasising by contrast the perspective of the oblique lines beneath. Without a question, absolutely great show and B&W is perfect choice here. Congrats :))

An interesting note and again a wonderfully graphic image, very much in your style, and one which I reckon probably works better in black and white rather than colour, giving the picture a lovely "gritty" quality.
A fine composition made strong by the juxtaposition of predominantly diagonal and vertical lines, perfect exposure, good strong contrasts and your usual exquisite details and sharpness.
And how clever that the image itself so well represents the letter "L"!

Very well executed urban shot. I like the composition which focuses the viewer's attention on the train. Conversion to monochrome makes an even stronger image.
I hope you enjoy your time in Norway! :)

The vertical lines of the skyscraper care for a good architectural picture, also very well technical.
Also the train on the metal construction as bridge gives a specially effect on these picture.
Excellent composition, lovely presentation.
Very well done, TFS.

Great vertical capture of the elevated train seen so much in old movies in B/W as your capture
Good upward POV forming the so searched and famous L composition
Like the contrast old train , modern building at the back
Indeed a good work, tfs

Hi Ann - I just saw Krzysztof's recent shot of the L, which he credits to yours, so I had to hunt it down as well! A nice black and white look (why are trains and subways so attractive in B&W?) up at the Loop train. The effect almost reminds me of a 60s futurism, the kind of Disney-like look at the amazing technology the future will bring, as this train streaks by the high rise behind it. Great catch as the train is stopped at the station. Thanks, and I hope you've been well! I need to go back and look at all those Route 66 shots you posted - I missed so many of them!

Interesting monochrome view of the L, a glimpse of the steel bridge structure, with the train intersecting the frame diagonally, and a plain and very tall skyscraper backdrop.

This is one L of a shot! Great POV, compo, tonal range, sharpness and clarity - not bad considering you were using a Canon camera! The modern skyscraper provides both texture and scale and an obvious contrast to the the older structure of the elevated line in front.
Liverpool used to have an elevated railway system that that ran the length of its dockland. It was known locally as the dockers umbrella, since they used to take shelter from the rain underneath the line.
