Photographer’s Note

This is a picture of the Alma Mater Statue with Altgeld Hall behind it during a snowstorm.

The Alma Mater statue displays the University’s motto of learning and labor in this statue. Learning and labor are depicted as twin figures between a woman in scholastic robes (the person in this picture). Above its base these words are engraved into the granite: To thy happy children of the future, those of the past send greetings, and Her children arise up and call her Blessed. Proverbs 31-28.

Altgeld Hall, built in 1897, is one of the oldest buildings on campus. The building was originally the home to the library, then it became the Law Building, and today it exists and the Department of Mathematics.
