‘Ushguli - Georgia's final frontier’
On my two previous pictures of Ushguli, the focus was on the mountain landscape.
Not surprisingly when you're at an altitude of 2.200 meters and have a view of a mountain range of over 5.000 meters.
Nevertheless, I would like to show two images that present the village Ushguli, or at least a part of it.
Ushguli comprises 4 settlements at walking distance from each other and they’re situated at 2.100 to 2.200 meters above sea level. This makes it the highest permanently inhabited village in Europe.
For those who didn’t see the previous pictures of Mestia: Everywhere in Svaneti, visitors will notice high defensive towers. Also in Ushguli. The purpose of these towers, built between the 9th and the 12th century, was the protection of the residents in case of war.
On the main picture you find the second settlement (arriving from Mestia).
The picture in the workshop shows a street in the first settlement. In both hamlets new houses are as well as absent.
In the fourth and last settlement (see my first picture of Ushguli) there’s a church and there are also two very simple eateries. There are no hotels. But in that part of Ushguli you find several people who rent rooms to visitors. I was very pleasantly surprised by the room we got. It was simply furnished but very neat. The shared bathroom was fully equipped.
The owners took care of breakfast and a warm meal (accompanied by delicious Georgian wine) in the evening. For the hike to the glacier they prepared us a lunchbox.
Communication was possible through the children or grandchildren of the villagers.
According to Wikipedia 70 families or about 200 people live in Ushguli, enough to support a small school.
In that school the children study English and again I was pleasantly surprised by the level of their English.
Another thing that happened a few times to us: We addressed ourselves to a local resident for some information. That person spoke Georgian and Russian and in Svaneti also Svan. We didn’t speak any of these languages but no problem. That person took his mobile phone, dialed a number, talked to someone, then handed us the phone and we heard a very young voice asking ‘Hello, how can we help you ?’.
Svaneti that has preserved its original medieval appearance and has retained most of its ancient traditions is for many visitors the final adventure of their journey in Georgia. However, this adventure is done very easily, safely and even with reasonable comfort.

Thia village seems to belong to another time and place. It must be an interesting feeling to visit there, and be removed from the modern sights of most other towns. It's nice to see these ancient structures in the middle of this beautiful landscape.

Bonjour Paul. Amicalement, Claude.

Superb view of this beige colored medieval castles among green surroundings. Excellent contrast colors and clarity. I am loving your series as I love the mountains and you are portraying them so well here. Very well researched detailed note with personal experience.

Hello Paul - The towers here are so interesting a subject and your series is fascinating showing us a little know and remote area of Georgia. Another excellent shot in a super series. TFS and warm regards Rosemary

This is an outstanding photo. The light & clarity is excellent, all details perfect. Superb view up to village houses and towers around. I like the superb contrast against cloudy bright sky. Well done.

ikeharel (57210) 2013-12-16 7:38
his rural town has more standing towers than the famous San-Gimignano in Italia.
Looks as an old built houses and towers, probably were used to store food in ancient times.
Fine taken from a superb POV that show all the towers there, and most houses of the village.

Breathtaking beauty the of this architectural complex, which brings so many towers, it seems that we are seeing a tiny hamlet in full swing, you've picked a fabulous POV including in the plane so many towers, is a style of construction which I believe has resemblance to anywhere else in the world.
A very good natural color.
The brightness is very good, as is the sharpness.
Well done. I love my congratulations.
Have a good day.

Bonjour PAul ,

Once again you show us a very interesting and beautiful photo, accompanied by a well written and fascinating note. The view of the village is stunning and the photo is perfectly well balanced and well exposed. I have had similar experiences of children acting as interpreters. One undeniably good side of globalization is the spreading of the English language which makes communication with the locals in "far away" countries so much easier.

Heel mooi gedaan, bedankt. Bedankt.

these incredible shots show a glimpse of the past that still survives and appears to prosper with a variety of new properties dotted amongst the towers.
This shot again shows the terrain and surrounding environment perfectly, such a lovely fine portrayal of a remote location.Great photography.

I like the composition, the warmth feel, serenity of the environment and the composition. You have certainly captured the characteristics and historical essence of this place of such interesting medieval architecture and a fabulous array of colours. The stunning low cloud formations over the mountains
enhance the overall impact of this image. I's a great pleasure to see this giving us a taste of Georgia, Amazing place to visit by the looks of it...
Great works, congrats.

beautiful presentation of this unique town. Not only it has an interesting setting among the mountains but also the towers seem to be unique and make a nice repeated element in your composition. I like vivid colors which make the picture very eye catching.

great view of this old architecture, I like the green mountains, well done.

A superb series of photos from Georgia's final frontier. When you see this one you have hard to believe that it is such a high altitude. Neverthless the POV is well-chosen and the composition is perfect with the tower on top of the hill and against the sky. The mix of old building and newer ones is also interesting. TFS. I wish you a Merry Christmas.
Waylim (25350) 2013-12-21 16:50
A beautiful and picturesque photo, love the rich color and energy of the summer with those large puffy clouds and green hills scattered with flower and houses and the castles. Like a scene out of a story book. Excellent color and light and good composition.
Have a great weekend and a Merry Christmas.

Nice greenery environment that surrounding the brown village, lovely old architectures that built by stones, good pov and good frame to show it all, thanks for sharing a fascinating village view.

A really beautiful combination of natural and architectural features of Svanetia. An excellent composition, bright light, vivid colors and perfect photographic qualities. A very good presentation of this mountainous part of Georgia with both nice picture and informative note!
Best regards and a very happy and prosperous new year!
willperrett (7038) 2014-01-04 3:19
What a remarkable place! And your note says that there's hardly a building here from modern times. The towers are of course for the same purpose as what they remind me strongly of: the tower villages of the Mani Peninsula in Greece. Happy New Year.
Angshu (55669) 2014-01-19 22:40
A good followup post and indeed one in which the towers are more prominent and are the highlights of this small settlement & the picture. Its a lovely picture from the TE perspective as well, as you have actually shown us a part of the world not shown well in any site or forum. As always a fine educative note
kiks (11749) 2014-02-02 7:07
Realy impressive this constructions. Very surreal and beautiful.
kato (11630) 2014-02-26 23:29
You're capturing well this village by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the village with high defensive towers for the protection of the residents in case of war and old resident's houses for settlement in highland. It's also impressive in high tower on hilltop. And, the surrounding nature with rich greenery draws out a good atmosphere.
fritzi007 (5382) 2014-02-27 14:46
a very interesting photo, I think Georgia is to visit. Your photo is perfect!
jmdias (55415) 2014-03-29 2:13
amazing view of these old towers against the hilly landscape. impressive structures and landscape, make me to think in the medieval towers of Italy.
