Pictured here is the façade of Powerscourt House in Co Wicklow that looks out over the Italian gardens and the huge staircase that leads down to the Triton Lake.
The house itself is a beautiful Palladian mansion with two very different facades depending on what angle you approach it from. On this side, facing the gardens is the south façade, a softer design of Palladian work. Originally only two stories high, it was extended soon after completion.
The North side of the house has a more grand and traditional Palladian style, and was intended to be the hugely impressive entrance to the house. The north façade is built on the formal classical temple architecture of Greece and Rome.
A castle stood on this site since the 13th century, and it was a place that many fought for possession of considering its strategic location watching over three rivers. In 1603 the lands became the property of Richard Wingfield and the modern era of Powerscourt began.
In 1730, the 1st Viscount Powerscourt commissioned Richard Cassels to build this impressive mansion. It was completed in 1741 and on completion was one of the grandest houses in Ireland. The house was designed around the castle which originally stood here.
1787 saw the addition of the third story on the south face, and further additions were added in the late 1800's.
At the time, some of the finest 18th century interiors in Ireland were to be found here. Sadly, in 1974 a fire broke out in one of the upper rooms, and within that one night the main house became a roofless burned shell. All of the reception rooms and bedrooms of the house were lost. There are some fascinating images online of the house as a ruined shell, which is how it remained for over 20 years.
Restored and renovated, the house reopened to the public in 1996, though much work remains to be done on the grand interiors. This is a slow process, but work is progressing. In the meantime, visitors are welcome to visit the house, the ground floor of which contains the best of Irish design in a number of stores, a restaurant and upstairs a children's museum. Of course the highlight for any visitor to Powerscourt is the extensive gardens, known across the world for their beauty and variety. Among the sights to see in the gardens is the Italian gardens, the Japanese gardens, the pet cemetery, the fern grotto, the walled garden, the triton lake with its iconic statues of the Pegasus guarding the entrance to the boathouse, and much more.
The grounds around the house and gardens are also dotted with numerous statues and fountains, many of which are visible in this shot. These include a marble copy of the Laocoön bought in Rome in 1848, Diana the huntress, Fame & Victory, Mercury, Apollo, Belvedere and many more. The Viscounts of Powerscourt enjoyed travelling extensively across Europe and buying or commissioning works of art to bring an international feel to the gardens, and their collections still do so today.
thanks for looking!

Ciao, buona notte e buona domenica

Wow, if the name of this place isn't spot on, I don't know what would be! It screams "powers-court" alright, without question. What a graceful and striking view this is, you've certainly done it justice with this composition...and I really like the idea to go with the panoramic format, suited just right!
Impressive grounds for an impressive estate. Each time I read your notes though, I'm amazed and equally saddened by how many sights have been ruined by fire. Glad to know something of this stature has been restored however, so that we may all be able to enjoy its beauty...even if only through pictures and an ocean away. :) Strong colors and detail, you can never go wrong with the blue/green combo. Enjoy the rest of the weekend. Take it easy.
Cheers from the other side of the Atlantic,

Hello Noel ,
Perfect symetrical capture in a well chosen panoramic format , of this amazing castle .
carlo62 (38707) 2014-05-11 2:24
siudzi (34141) 2014-05-11 2:48
Wow! What a fantastic palace you have visited and photographed! Panorama format tits perfectly to this impressive architecture. Love the quality and charming classy presentation which were achieved here. A top class shot!

Very impressive house and gardens and no doubt very costly to maintain. A very precisely framed symmetrical composition which shows the imposing classical architecture to to good effect. I like the light and colours and, especially, the superb detail.
mirosu (15302) 2014-05-11 3:55
You have captured this beautiful building from excellent viewpoint. I like the nice symmetrical arrangement, it works very well for it. The contrast against blue sky is very goo, all the details superb.
All well arranged in long landscape format.
Very well done.

photoray (13670) 2014-05-11 6:43
The Powerscourt House is very impressive, solid rock block construction with numerous windows for light inside and the two domes on the ends, and would enjoy strolling around the gardens.
Thanks for sharing,

Hello, perfect photo of this castle with superb dof and clarity. What a great place to go visit and wander around the gardens. There is a little bit of loss of definition in those two triangular shrubs but other than that this is a gorgeous photograph. Congrats,

Very nice shot of this beautiful Powerscourt House. You used very well the symetry in your composition. The light conditions are very good, better than the ones I had when I was there a few years ago (cloudy sky !).
Have a nice week,

Ah, beautiful Powerscourt House and its grand garden. I see that you got a much better weather there than we had on our visit when it was raining. Still we where impressed by the gardens.
Gorgeous strong saturated colors, the greens and blues are amazing, makes this truly very attractive and pleasant to look at.
have a great sunday

Yes, I do remember this castle and his history from your previous posts. Excellent panoramic view without wires, cars and crowds. I also like the grey-green-blue colors combination, very attractive photo.

Gidday caro Noel
Now that's one helluva garden. I can just imagine all those imbred aristocrats running round it clothed in nothing but their goat antlers and Chanel No 5, playing those weird aristo-games they're all so famous for. What a pity about the fire, as I can only imagine how grand the internal section was when I see the majesty of the outside. Beautiful rich colours and contrasts here. The details on the façade are really quite exceptional. Is this is an HDR? The reason I ask is not because it's too heavy handed, but because I see no heavily shaded areas, where I would expect to see some. And the sky looks a little Craigesque ;)
Either way, a real cracker. "Me likes too much" - as my little Italian uncle says when we talk food and wine and English :D
ourania (36386) 2014-05-12 9:40
this is a very fine and charming description of the mansion, the building is exquisitely sharp and clear and you have also included a pleasing and interesting context. I like very much the bright colours and the descriptive shadows , they ‘ve all been defined so boldly and are instantly appealing to the viewer’s eyes. Your note is most interesting too and informs us how much more is hiding all over the gardens and behind the walls. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
Fis2 (90015) 2014-05-12 10:54
Excellent panorama frame.
abmdsudi (46914) 2014-05-12 22:40
Lovely letterbox format focuses your attention on the main interest spreading across the frame and I can appreciate the immaculate details so much better, the symmetry you have chosen enhancing the structures of this magnificent building. Lovely deep blue to colour the background adding the appropriate contrast as well and the brilliant light gives it real cheery atmosphere of being there at the same time giving us the ideas as to the huge size. The treatment works very well. A graceful architectural shot!
rogerl (1544) 2014-05-13 5:57
Noel, nice panoramic shot with great clarity against a lovely sky. The color contrasts with blues, browns, greens are really nice. Perfect symmetry in the shot (though not in the building). Is the roofline non-level, or is it just me? Thanks.
Indrasish (2913) 2014-05-14 1:08
Wonderful shot here.. I like the panoramic view of this magnificent building.. Also Like the composition and superb image quality too.. Also you got a nice blue sky..
And thanks for your informative note too.. Very well done..
Good afternoon and wish you all the best..
Kamilutka (8105) 2014-05-14 3:10
this is truly impressive building and the picture decidedly gives it justice. The slightly distant POV offered wide perspective and very good view over the whole castle and some of the surroundings gardens which seem to be kept in immaculate state. I like the symmetry of the composition which keeps the image simple and elegant and allows to focus more on the beautiful details of this architecture.
You definitely had helping weather conditions and made the most of them, as a result the colors are nicely saturated and vivid. Very well managed light and perfect sharpness finish off the photo.
Thanks for sharing

I like more of these picture than your last black and white picture.
This powerscourt House is wonderful taken with a very nice superwide picture.
Sharpness and clarity are excellent made.
Very well done, TFS.
worldcitizen (7618) 2014-05-15 15:39
You've showing us another impressive structure. I like the architecture and the symmetrical details. With the lovely garden, and the deep, blue sky above, this scene is so rich. It's interesting that the photo was taken in December, but the lawn is still so green. The trees on the left are bare, but without them, I would guess that this was taken in a different season.
Sonata11 (33697) 2014-05-15 20:32
very beautiful composition of architecture and wonderfully executed. Perfect management of colors, light, sharpness, clarity. Fantastic work. Love it.
