Pictured here is a view of a part of Biscayne Boulevard, in downtown Miami USA.
I have always thought of Miami as a fascinating city, a combination of the modern towering blocks and the famous art deco hotels and buildings, all combined into a unique urban place.
In this shot, we can see on the right hand side, 4 of the modern buildings typical of the city, and in front of those the unusual shape of the American Airlines Arena. But the building of most interest is the tower on the left, which unfortunately cannot be very well seen in this picture.
The tower on the left belongs to the Freedom Tower which was formerly the Miami News building. It was completed in 1926 and was the city HQ for the newspaper. it is a rather unique design being Mediterranean revival with specific elements taken from Seville in Spain. The unusual Cuppola contains a beacon. The building stands a total of 78 meters high.
Miami news left the site in 1957 and at this point, the building began to take on what was the beginning of a somewhat heavier history.
Refugees feeling the rule of Fidel Castro began arriving in Miami in the 1960's, and the Freedom tower was used by the government to process documents of the newcomers, and to provide medical assistance. It was sold to private owners in 1974.
The founder of the Cuban American National Foundation, Jorge Mas Canosa bought the building in 1997 for the princely sum of 4.1 million dollars. He restored the building including its iconic tower and converted it into a monument for all those many people who fled from Cuba to the US.
2004 saw the tower bought by Pedro Martin of the Terra Group who proposed building new condos to the back of the building. This was strongly opposed and in 2005 the developers company donated the building to Miami Dade College who continue to own it today.
To visit the Freedom Tower today will allow you to see its existing purpose as a museum, cultural centre and place of education. It is becoming a recognized centre for its major exhibitions and its assistance in growing art in the community.
I would have liked to see this building more, and to get better idea of its scale and position in the city, but unfortunately, this photo was taken from a boat that did not dock in this area so I did not have the chance. It is on my list should I ever get back to this beautiful city though!
Thanks for looking.

Good contrast with this b&w version, interesting architecture contrast, well composed with the water in the Fg, nice brightness.

Hello dear Noel,
Very nice b&w capture from Florida with good layout.

Many interesting notes.

As always, you have given us a very interesting and informative note.
And this is a fine monochrome photograph to illustrate it. The composition is perfect and also very pleasing, the light and contrasts and tones are delightful and the details and sharpness are exquisite. The Freedom Tower and those foreground boats stand out stunningly against their darker backgrounds.

hi noel. the americans are keen on rebuilding samples of everything in their homelands, aren't they (so that they don't need to cross the oceans, both sides...)? i got used to seeing the fake eiffel tower of vegas, but a moorish tower would be the last thing i would expect to see in florida, yet there it is. very interesting and informative, of course. good idea to present this view in b&w, now the moire pattens on the block are much more obvious. good shot.

strana scelta del b&w, questo è un luogo che, con la giusta luce, ha sicuramente dei colori splendidi, ma proprio per questo è una foto originale e la differenza tra i palazzi di destra e il resto della foto, è ancor più evidente.

Interesting monochrome scene of Biscayne with the boat friendly foreground, skyscrapers, then a glimpse of the Freedom Tower.
I think Miami has the most water frontage of any American City, being located on the Atlantic waterfront and numerous canals intersecting the city.
I always head for less populated locations when visiting Florida. The Keys are a big delight with all of the water activities and scenery.

Nice compo in B&W with these interesting elements. I like the small boat in the FG and the modern buildings. Good work.

I instantly recognized this as Florida based on your title, but the black & white had my mind in a bit of a funk...pretty rare that I've ever come across a scene like this, particularly here, where there's not the traditional tropical type colors and vibe. Ouuuch, my brain hurts!? :)
The monochrome is definitely one of the things that grabs my focus on this shot, as it's out of the customary Miami Vice look and feel. That twist on the visual, which makes me take an even closer look, is quite interesting...I love what it does to the sensory perceptions.
I would have never had a clue about the history of the Freedom Tower building, amazing to think that something so unassuming would be that historical. Not only a lovely photo, but a very learned one. Big points on all accounts! Nicely done good sir! Happy Hump Day.
Cheers from the the other side of the U.S.,

Il est rare de voir des photos noir et blanc de cet endroit mais le résultat est très intéressant. Une note explicative très complète.

Hi Noel, Once i had to spend a day in Miami because I missed my flight to Chile and had to wait for the next. And I was disappointed after all I had heard about it. but there are places that are quite nice, and this is for sure such a place. Great short from the side of water - did you went for a cruise to see the celebrities houses? I like the lower part of the shot very much with a boat, palm and this tower like taken from Spain. B7w works very well here.
Warm regrads Malgo

Nice view of Miami in B&W, not many would associate Miami without colours, but your presentation with the explanatory note makes it a perfect choice here. Excellent composition, it seems you have covered it all from your POV. I think B&W has helped a lot to show the dramatic sky effectively in the BG. Very good shot with an superbly written note. Thanks for sharing.
snunney (89806) 2014-01-29 4:50
I like this composition very much; there are so many interesting things to see and all in superb clarity. The picture is very well composed and suits black and white to a T. Superb technical presentation.
SnapRJW (31627) 2014-01-29 6:29
Hi Noel - I'm impressed with both your choice of monochrome and your conversion. It seems to buck the trend when you present Miami in B&W, one naturally thinks of colour, light and sunshine so it is refreshing to see just how good this shot looks as you have presented it. The contrasts and tonal range convey the feeling of an impending storm and you have captured the 3D qualities of the buildings extremely well. Sharp from front to back, well composed, this is one very fine piece of work!
Warm regards Rosemary
PS. Fascinating note too!

Miami in BW is rarely seen, but this is the main attraction of this image. Contrast is so measured and the composition is so balanced that the frame has become a beauty.
Your note is so informative and vivid that it creates an image itself. Great.
Thanks for sharing.

I like very much your monochrome treatment, in my opinion it's a treat to see sunny and bright places like this in monochrome, the play of contrasts is fantastic and an attractive graphism emerges from a scene that would perhaps look just pretty in colour. Your selection of a square frame, the excellent definition of shapes and details, the well moderated whites and the overall silvery tint make your interpretation of this view so stylish and delightful. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

courageous decision to convert this scene into B&W,but I can only tell you-was definitely worth!
It makes it so unique and thanks to the monochrome treatment it takes on a new, more expressive character.
The way you processed the image is superb and even the sky helped you to make this shot so spectacular.
Excellent composition and quality!

One of my friend's sons lives in Miami so your shot immediately caught my interest. I love the thought that they may have walked along the water's edge.
I think you have done a fine b&w exposure, here. There is definitely evidence of black and near white, with a whole range of tones in between.
The boat is strongly positioned in the r/h corner and offers a scene-setting introduction.
I particularly like the rippling water and its abundance of reflections. I think b&w shots show of such details very well.
My warm regards,

I don't think I've seen many black and white photos from you and this one is very stylish and perfectly fits the mood of the day. Excellent balance in contrast, nothing's too much or too little, and a great view of the modern city of course.
Thanks and have a nice evening!
macjake (61358) 2014-01-30 15:41
now this is very interesting....we don't get to see many black and white phots from Miami!!!!!
most people want to display the bright sun, the bright vivid colors etc...
reading the note, its strange how buildings change hands, change owners, change functions....
looking at that building, it reminds me so much of the 7 Sisters in Moscow. Or at least the top portion that we can see anyways.
So you really enjoyed Miami eh? I've never really been too curious about that city...just never appealled to me I guess, but thats what happens when you're not a beach bum and don't enjoy the water.
cool shot in the black and white motif.
Now when I see Miami I can't help but think of Dexter.
Do you watch that show?
Fis2 (89961) 2014-02-01 8:59
Interesting b&w photo.
Curious modern architecture.
I like tower left.
Good evening and nice sunday

I think Miami is very picturesque city, I'd like to see bright colors, but perhaps you had the reasons for this b&w solution. Good graphic, perfect sharpness, interesting note.
Miguel82 (26541) 2014-05-18 19:35
Noel, a b&w version showing Miami port, many boats and high towers, grey sky in the bg, good memory from your stay in Florida, all the best, greetings
