Photographer's Note

Yesterday the biggest birds ever visited my backyard!

First I observed them in the morning, in slow stride around the field picking food. Obviously they found something eatable since they were still around when I returned in the afternoon (and this morning again for that matter).

We are talking about a couple of common cranes (Grus grus), one of the largest birds in my part of the world if not the largest at 100–130 cm of length, with a 180–240 cm wingspan and a weight of 4.5–6 kg on long legs.

The global population of the common crane is less than 250.000 and the majority of them is nesting in Scandinavia and Russia, migrating to the Mediterranean during winter.

In the afternoon I was so lucky to witness elements from the famous crane dance - which I in my ignorance thought only occurs in the mating season. I was able to capture Mr Crane dancing, for the TrekEarth audience - enjoy!

Workshop 2: Mr and Mrs Crane.
