Another shot from Painted Hills, though the park is not that big, but there are so many ways to compose beautiful shots and composition here in this surreal Mars like landscape. The interesting thing is plants can not grow on these hills, leaving the hills exposed of its texture and colors. This flowering bush is growing just under and outside of the hill. I included it for its contrasting color and add an element of life and to enhance and the composition.
I was considering making this one black and white just to play a trick on some those who didn’t like my black and white version of Monument Valley on my last post.
Some information about the area - Painted Hills is one of the three units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, located in Wheeler County, Oregon It totals 3,132 acres (12.7 km²) and is located 9 miles (14 km) northwest of Mitchell, Oregon and 75 miles east of Bend. Painted Hills is named after the colorful layers of its hills corresponding to various geological eras, formed when the area was an ancient river floodplain.

Great colors mix.
Pablo25 (3184) 2009-04-06 10:05
WOW, excellent shot, very colorfull. Nicely done. I love it.
cherryripe (21015) 2009-04-06 10:09
This is stunning with an excellent contrast between the bush, earth and path. The composition is simple but very effective. Excellent sharpness too. Pity we don't have more time so as to visit this region but you can't do everything in 3 weeks.
fulvio52 (8314) 2009-04-06 10:13
Brilliant shot, Way! A GREAT RGB, technically flawless and striking in terms of originality, one of those pictures that get my imagination going and nobody knows where it's ever gonna end up, not even me.... Which is always the best part if you're a dreamer! Say, why don't you post a little B&W WS for those who felt compelled to be subjective on your previous post from Monument Valley? In my not at all humble opinion (IMNAAHO) I think you could turn this one into an outstanding B&W too... Love it, man! Have a wonderful day, and thanks for sharing this unique view from the Painted Hills. Hugs from The Lowlands,

Superb Way !
colours ! blue, red, yellow/green with the little white wooden lane in-between, gorgeous.... !!!
Aliskt (0) 2009-04-06 10:26
Your photo depicts tranquillity. The soft colours please the eye. The silvery cast sea adds wealth in this composition.
Well done and best regards.
Valerka (8171) 2009-04-06 10:28
Hehe, I wish Mars were as green and oxygeny as our amazing Earth!
I like the lovely contrast between the red heaps of... what's that, in fact?, and the green of the tree here.
A smart guess!
smarcell (19963) 2009-04-06 10:33
Really a place from another planet, with such bright colors. I suggestto crop the very bottom part, and remove the band with the grey peebles, Then only the yellow bush is left, and everything becomes even more abstract and unreal.
KLB (23723) 2009-04-06 10:49
I'm always very impressed by this marvelous place. Colours are so gorgeous, and you've mixed them in a perfect way : RGB, well done...
Your vertical format is very well chosen, and your framing really effective.
Excellent work, contrast, fine quality, all is perfecly handled.
Floydian (30970) 2009-04-06 10:53
What a great contrast you found here. Stunning red and blue fighting for victory, while yellow stands tall and proud in front....wonderful composition, excellent exposure...great shot, i like this a lot.
jemaflor (77476) 2009-04-06 10:59
Great result with allthese differents colours, well framed, an impressive landscape, tfs.
BennyV (13378) 2009-04-06 10:59
What makes this shot stand out for me, is not the almost extraterrestrial landscape, not the plant, nor the colour contrast, but the presence of that bit of road there. This gives it a human dimension, this adds culture to nature...and that's what I like most here (but then I'm not a nature photographer, of course). Thanks for the shot & have a good week.
berek (32312) 2009-04-06 11:34
you caught very interesting graphic view with this point of view. creative work. I love pastel nature colours too.
have a nice week.
casperduppy (1590) 2009-04-06 12:16
Way, I was flicking through the thumbnails and automatically knew this was your shot before seeing your name. A wonderful shot full of deep colours and all sorts of different textures. Very well presented and composed - it really does look like a different planet than Earth!
Best regards, Casper
CLODO (27654) 2009-04-06 12:19
Excellent colors and low POV , I regret the white pavement, but it is there to prevent nature destruction by human being.
tomescuc (3291) 2009-04-06 12:24
perfect composition, few essential elements, sharp and great colors. I plan to check this place out soon as well.
biglad (437) 2009-04-06 12:25
Great shot! It's nicely composed, showing only a bit of the road and allowing the imagination to infer it winding through the hills towards the bakground. The inclusion of the bush in the foreground and the deep blue of the sky make for a perfect compliment to the deep red of the hills and the white of the concrete.
devimeuxbe (58557) 2009-04-06 13:10
amazing light and incredible colors. It look like in an other earth. Very nice picture
Philippe (11836) 2009-04-06 13:15
Hi, Way. The red of the hills is really surprising and contrasts well with the sky. Another interesting source of contrast is the wooden footbridge and, of course, the yellow bush in the foreground. Nice diagonal lines on the left and right sides. A very good image.
Have a nice day,
mark_mk (266) 2009-04-06 13:41
ah, there you go, Painted Hills. I ahve seen this place on many images here on TE and everytime I see it it is always impressive, it`s for sure high on my list of places I need to visit one day.
What a beautiful one you have here, the composition with the yellow flowers in the FG is just great and the vertical framing works especially well here, wonderful shot!
sacimar (25971) 2009-04-06 14:19
Excellent shot, I love it! It looks like Mars..... great composition with the yellow plant, excellent defintion and details, great job my friend,
Colombiana (2949) 2009-04-06 17:48
This place does look very surreal. The colors of these painted hills are amazing and the yellow-green bush in the f/g is a really nice touch adding contrast.
Regards from Miami,
phwall (6785) 2009-04-06 19:04
A fine capture, the colours are marvelous. I like your vertical composition too, it fits well with the topography of the location.
You just show enough to whet the appetite for more.
Hmmm I'm wondering if that structure constitutes a bridge of some sort, quite possible.
rlrad (1845) 2009-04-06 19:09
Awesome. Truly awesome composition and color. It almost convinces me that I want to visit Oregon again someday, but I doubt I will be able to fit it in with everywhere else I need to go. So, I will use this photograph to help me realize what I missed when I was there and to experience it through your eyes.
St. Louis, Missouri, USA

who sez that there is no beauty in the barren land?
i specially like the composition, and the color mix.
ChrisJ (93372) 2009-04-06 20:49
Good sharpness & minimalist composition with just the blue, red, & yellow green colors of the sky rock & tree. Superb sharpness & pov, with excellent saturation & contrast. Tfs!

Hello Way. Great photo, well balanced composition and extraordinary colour pallet. The bush was indeed a good inclusion for contrast. Thanks for sharing.
BlueRaven (37) 2009-04-07 1:03
This looks like Mars indeed. Awesome composition and colours! If that yellow plant wasn't there one could really think that you had gone to a different planet for this shot. I love the subtle frame, too, it's a perfect fit for this picture. A shot that definitely sparks imagination.
Brilliant job, thanks for sharing!
Dpbours (222) 2009-04-07 2:09
Amazing contrast in colours here!!
Oh wow, I would just love to go there. What a photographic treat it is!
gary91 (15347) 2009-04-07 2:17
It's been quite a long time I didn't have a look at your gallery and this stunning one gives me the opportunity to leave you a small comment and hello.
What a beautiful and perfect picture...
Ths composition is so clever and this color game so well seen and managed.
This vertical format is suiting the scene so well and leads the eye gently through the successive slices.
Really great work, all my congratulations.
Have a great day.
Best regards, Christian
danos (80873) 2009-04-07 2:18
impressive scene of the Painted hills with these red hills and in the foreground to grow up the lonely life in this arid place. The perfect combination of the colours, make the scene unique.Well done.
patdeph (35746) 2009-04-07 3:38
if the road was not here,we could think that we are on another planet! What an incredible landscape,so dry and so red!The contrast blue-red-yellow is fantastic, and this is very well framed with the inclusion of the tre on the foreground and this small part of road!Splendid!
delkoo (68) 2009-04-07 4:23
Your photo has a pretty well chosen pov ; Light management, contrast, color and definition are simply superb,.
baba_flies (8829) 2009-04-07 6:21
Hello Way! SPECTACULAR this one ... and who did not like your recent b/w upload :))) I have just visited the photo museum in Paris and one of the ladies showing her stuff (Girogia Fiorio) did all in b/w and it was BREATHTAKING (like your recent upload), it went very deep. Don't pay too much attention about such things, it is a matter of taste as always. Okay I always do to, you got me!!!! LOL. Fascinating piece of land here, the little plant makes it different, baba_flies would have left it out and had no foreground but you found this little treasure. Very nice. Have a wonderful day ... Barbara.
lrw1966 (1632) 2009-04-07 8:40
Marvelous landscape with amazing color. Impressively presented with excellent educational. notes. Nicely done.
edytungkal (4551) 2009-04-07 9:26
This shot is awesome and full of beautiful colours, maybe just suggest to less fg and include higher sky because i see you have very clear blue sky that day. Nonetheless its a great compo to enjoy....thanks
npecanhuk (59004) 2009-04-07 9:28
What a magnificent composition! With simple elements you have created such an eye-catching colorful picture, with incredible shapes, textures and lights! TFS - Congratulations!
Wandering_Dan (3449) 2009-04-07 10:06
Hi, Way -
I had started to write that I didn't think this would work in B&W, since a large part of the photo's fascination for me is the use of few but powerful colors.
Then I thought maybe I should check it out first. And it works! I posted the results in the Workshop.
I do like this one as it is, as well. As I said above, the colors are few and powerful - a great combination. The lines and curves are strong in either representation.
gracious (20025) 2009-04-07 11:36
Thank you once again for the awesome view of Painted Hills! must be nice to drive along the road with both sides of the land with fantastic colour!
I loved the pov with the best colour contrast in the beautiful composition!
my sincere regards always
Sistercosmo (242) 2009-04-07 11:49
Hello dear Way!
Wonderful shot - simple and impressive. The colors are intense and I really love the pov you chose. Really an amazing landscape that you've captured wonderfully here!
Thanks and take good care!
ManuMay (34357) 2009-04-07 23:58
It really seems to be fromanother planet!!
Wonderful colour tones and very good choosen point of view in order to compose this so different capture!!
I like specially the way you have placed the path and the plant, giving a good atmosphere!!
Thanks fot teaching us about photo graphy....
Have a very nice day...
aadilj (18102) 2009-04-08 0:51
Hello Way, this is again superlative work with such stark and rich hues, lovely textures and nice composition. I like the way the shot has been balanced and composed with an amazing impact
trekks (14348) 2009-04-08 3:10
I tried to see this in B&W : it does not work. So the strong color mix is everything to do with this composed view of the valley crossed between the hills and the way you compose it with a bit of diagonal for each of these elements
.road running through the valley
.with exception of the tree which is neither diagonal nor round
A great combination of color saturation and it works superbly!
holmertz (34533) 2009-04-08 9:26
I remember this area from your gallery some time ago. It must be one of the strangest places on earth. This is an incredibly sharp and well composed picture, absolutely surreal.
Thanks for sharing.
avene (12675) 2009-04-08 11:19
will it surprise you to say that I like this photo a lot? :) the intense colours are fantastic, and I like a lot the different accent from the small plant in the foreground, and how the path disappears among the hills. great shot, my compliments.
banaei_nikon (777) 2009-04-08 20:41
This is stunning with an excellent contrast between the bush, earth and path. colours ! blue, red, yellow/green with the little white wooden lane in-between, gorgeous.... !!!
plimrn (21344) 2009-04-08 20:48
I especially like your meticulous framing. The intensity of red hills is set off nicely by the plant, the boardwalk and that slice of blue sky with the clouds seeming to echo the walkway..
zeca (19762) 2009-04-08 21:36
The landscape is realy amazing, from another world! The quality of your capture is excellent, professional. Well taken!
shevchenko (18989) 2009-04-08 21:48
Interesting composition about an unique site that plants unable growing on it, I do see different type of soil at the bottom of photo allowed plant growing well to make good contrast of color to the reddish hill, creative pov, good shoot.
Tobias__Ortmann (2638) 2009-04-09 5:56
this is awesome I really like the contrast here great idea to put the bush also into the image
Wonderfull pov and great composition
colours are great too
very well done
jonathan_hart (21274) 2009-04-09 9:00
a POV and a reference to mars i remember in Peter's gallery
what a fabulous place ! nicely composed, but i wonder if there is or not too much contrast as you lose some details of the wooden path
BelCan75 (2201) 2009-04-09 11:21
Great shot with such wonderful contrast between the road and the hills. Great colours, details and lighting. This almost looks like a scene from outerspace. Great POV which you have captured so beautiful. Great work!
marietom (34607) 2009-04-09 13:41
wonderful composition, with very nice colors. I like your title !
pablominto (53744) 2009-04-10 0:35
The lines and shapes are appealing to my eyes!
The composition is a little masterpiece, with inclusion of the green plant as foreground interest...
Stunning colour palette, hard to imagine such colours exist in nature!
bracasha75 (24487) 2009-04-10 1:47
O this is excellent cuted shot and make this red hills and the blue sky realy like that they are from "red planet"
Thanks for sharing
chawax (17584) 2009-04-10 8:08
Very surprising picture ! I love the contrast between red hills and the green plant in the foreground. I love too the way the footpath catches our attention and drives us to this little valley.
paololg (31448) 2009-04-10 14:46
Ciao dear friend,
it seems to be really on the red planet or in a mountain of strawberries. I like the way in which you have inserted the white line in the red, between the green and the blue one. You have stupendously played with the colors and the forms, compliments!
Ciao, have a nice w.e.!
BurhanettinMasa (641) 2009-04-11 1:09
Crucial colours and a good composition ...
mikele_pl (2400) 2009-04-11 10:09
your gallery from the Painted hills is one of the best around here on TE and this image is just another fine example. Beautiful deep colors, the play of light and shadow, plus well chosen composition. Everything works so fine here!
jhm (131736) 2009-04-12 2:16
A very fine picture, yellow wild flowers in foreground.
This in combination with the road that disappear between the mountains.
I find these photograph very nice, colours and depth are superb.
Very well done, TFS.

MarianneS (15338) 2009-04-15 14:11
Excellent composition! There are so many different view of this strange place on TE!!! You still made a very original one.
A great success well deserved!
maloutim (9621) 2009-04-16 11:45
Indeed, it is like living on Mars! I had heard about Monument valley and all that, but I had never known about these firy red hills of Oregon! They are just incredible! I wonder what mineral they are made of?
Your composition is perfect; the colours are great! Thanks for sharing!
Ptitcaid (656) 2009-04-17 2:31
Ce sable rouge, oui, comme sur la planète Mars est trés beau ! ! !
Joli contraste avec les fleurs jaunes à l'avant-plan.
Salut ! P'tit Caïd
Asiulus (1176) 2009-04-17 12:28
Mars on not, delicious layers of colours attract attention at once. Marvellous place, nicely photographed.
Kielia (22257) 2009-04-18 12:15
great decision! Although the light might have been even more impressive in B&W…. But it is this special mix of strong colors that makes this image very fascinating. Outstanding POV and the format is also well working. TFS!
Angshu (53966) 2009-04-20 2:29
Well composed in a tight vertical frame with the road, running through the red outcrop. I have seen postings of Painted Hills from other members, similar to your pano-post, but this is very unique. I also like the green hedge with small yellow flowers in the FG, providing rich contrast and the slice of blue sky at the top. Very original & wonderfully composed!
Atousa (7123) 2009-05-04 5:48
Its one of the best shots I have seen from this amazing place..the compo is great n the colours wonderful..beautiful curves..thanks for sharing.
riclopes (35577) 2009-05-07 3:04
This is a powerful image of a surreal world, Way. It sure makes me dream and that's all I ask for. Superb original composition with a very smart inclusion of the green bush and whitish path that gives contrast and make us go through those widing hills. No way I would choose a monochromatic version over these wonderful colors.
p.s.- I agree with everything you said about the points. There's nothing wrong with them but I feel stupid using them because they don't mean anything to me. I turned them off just to see how it goes and I'm loving it so far, so I think I'll keep things this way.
penny12 (132) 2009-05-28 2:21
Spectacular shot with very good colours. I love the sky and the hills with the road in the middle give dimension. I like every single pixel of the shot!
jimkil (1730) 2009-06-05 15:17
The red hues are superb way, contrasts very well with the blue sky while a touch of green also boosts the scene. The walkway looks inviting to explore this other potential planet. Beautiful shot Way
foozi (7101) 2009-06-18 5:34
such a superbs presentation of colours and well chosen graphic. It gives such a splendid visual impact.
The beauty lies in the lines and the strength of rich dense colours.
nice presentation of neat work.
eversmile (11628) 2009-06-19 0:40
I was sad not to see anymore Peter Boehringer's work on Painted hills, but I hadn't imagine you would take over! That's an enchanting surprise!
That's an excellent shot with an effective POV and great bright colors. It definitively looks very special, out of this world, and your title is appropriate. The uncluttered composition is striking and it is very balanced.
gmg (4202) 2009-06-21 7:57
Here there's again a beautiful composition, with hues contrast and the diagonal lined that lead the eye. Red green and blue make a wonderful scene.
speedymanu (3485) 2009-08-11 16:21
a lot has already been said, I just wish to add WOW, wow, wow.
kiks (11749) 2009-09-01 11:24
WOW.. this is great work. Indeed the inclusion of the plant is perfect here not only for the color but also for the texture but i must say that the white path at the bg make at my opinion the compo very very strong. Congratulations
jwmunro (286) 2009-10-19 18:41
Hello Way -
Wow, another spot on image. What I like about many of your images is how you break the landscape down into simple geometric elements or patterns. Here we have what looks like a boring/nothing landscape but by placing a rabbit bush in the FG and using the boardwalk as a leading line/dividing line breaking the ravine into distinct elements. The light and the texture of the landscape is handled masterfully. Bravo! Well done!
Thank you for sharing.
fabianoleite (9208) 2010-02-22 16:48
Very interesting comparison, the redness of the hills is very strong indeed. The path creates a great contrast in the middle. Excellent work, congratulations and regards from Brazil!
BluSimo (9392) 2010-03-12 17:04
Hi Way, this is a great shot. I love the contrast between the only thing alive, the bush, and the solitary architecture between hills. fantastic colors and composition! ciao
Bluejeans (64247) 2010-07-13 5:27
Ola Way ,
Parece mesmo um foto em Marte , magnifica a cor vermelha destas colinas fazem um belo contraste com o azul e com estas planta verde no primeiro plano , bom uso da foto na vertical , parabéns!!
Um abraço Gonçalo
Ricx (13489) 2010-10-15 12:12
Hi Way, In some ways this does not look real- a path to a sand hil;ls- Is it all man made? a good sharp image with a good focal point on the fg. Well done Rich
s_lush (16128) 2010-11-08 21:49
This photo simple on its composition but rich in great colors and its aesthetic values is a real masterpiece. An absolutely brilliant job!
edouard_lauer (1247) 2010-11-08 22:59
what have I to say: fantastic colors and contrast between heaven, earth and plants. A surrealistic image... and a good question.
kiasari (62) 2011-03-02 23:26
I really like the colors of this photo. A nice shot with a good POV and well managed framing. TFS.
sittipong (251) 2011-03-05 17:40
I love the white line in the center of the frame.
mkamionka (28418) 2011-06-25 2:59
I seem to have missed this beautiful capture. I never really expected to see such incredible landscapes in Oregon. Although I think I have seen one of your uploads from that place already. The composition is brilliant and the landscape I guess not less surprising than the Mars. The colors are extraordinary and that is what makes it extremely interesting and unusual.
Including the plant in the foreground was a great idea too.
Thank you for sharing it.
Have a great weekend,
Robert1969 (6758) 2011-07-10 10:37
Total Recall Part II ? :-)
You show that Mother Nature is very beautiful she has very special places.
Very beautiful is your chosen position.
Not only are the flowering bush and the road / path a nice break in the picture, they create also the depth in this picture.
Another strong point of this picture is that you can feel the loneliness.
The great light shows every detail and make the colors beautiful.
Thanks for youre compliments by my last pictures.

fotka (2905) 2012-03-02 8:22
Indeed it looks like from planet Mars except that we don't have walkway there. Mayby in the future.
It is a beautiful shot and I enjoy your photo very much. Fantastic composition with orange hills and lovely yellow plant in the foregrount. An excellent colors, light, sharpness and note.
Have a nice weekend,

Wow ! Quelle photo originale avec ses ondulations et ses couleurs vives. Cela donne un beau coup d'oeil. Belle photo !
abmdsudi (36276) 2012-07-06 23:01
An amazing and unusual landscape, isn't nature wonderful! It reminds me of a scene from Star Wars but this definitely not computer-generated! This really is special, lovely contrasts of colour and the lunar landscape effect which is well balanced with the fresh lively plant in the foreground. A very nicely composed shot in great light, I love the perspective the view has given to the length adding an extra dimention to the scene and I like the way it goes from eyecatching boardwalk to the curve of the hill in the distance. Lovely vibrancy of colours and open, sweeping scene, and very well presented. C0ngrats
subhendu_bagchi (24343) 2013-10-13 10:44
wow! Love the layers of colours here. The reddish brown landscape is looking superb under such contrasting blue sky. Great depth and nice sharpness. The bush in front is a nice focal point of this composition. Superb shot. Tfs.
Vague (307) 2014-01-28 1:02
Hello again Way,
A good frame that manages to highlight the subject. Vivid colours, deptg of field; perfect shot overall. The life of the plant contrasts very well with the red & grainy image of the soil. Very original title too!
