The birds paradise, a photo from Quintana Roo, Southeast

Photographer's Note

Isla Contoy is a small island in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, approximately 30 kilometers north of Isla Mujeres. The island is only 8.5 km in length and has an area of 3.17 square kilometres.
Since 1961, Isla Contoy is protected by the Mexican government and declared a National Park in February 1998. The island is jointly run by the Isla Mujeres-based Non-Governmental Organization, Amigos de Isla Contoy A.C. and the Secretary of Environment, Natural Resources and Fishing (SEMARNAT).
Supervised eco-tourism and regulated commercial fishing is allowed on and near the island. Only a few tour companies have permission to bring the only at maximum 200 daily visitors to Isla Contoy. Visitors need to apply for permission to visit the island at the Park offices in Isla Mujeres or Cancún.
Four species of turtle find a safe haven for nesting on the beaches of the island, namely the loggerhead turtle, Green turtle, Hawksbill turtle, and the leatherback turtle. The reserve is also a sanctuary to approximately 152 tropical marine birds, like the frigate bird, brown pelican, and the double-crested cormorant.

IL PARADISO DEGLI UCCELLI

Il Parco Nazionale Isla Contoy é localizzato a 30 chilometri a nord di Isla Mujeres dove le aque del Mar dei Caraibi si uniscono a quelle del Golfo del Messico. La Barriera Corallina Ixlachè, segna l’inizio della seconda barriera corallina piú lunga del mondo, “El Gran Arrecife Mesoamericano”.
Isla Contoy è un’ area naturale protetta dal 1961 e fu decretata Parco Nazionale dal 1998. È un’ isola disabitata e amministrata dalla Commissione Nazionale delle aree naturali protette (CONAN) dipendente dal Ministero dell’Ambiente e Risorse Naturali (SEMARNAP).
Contoy è lunga 8,75 chilometri, la sua superficie terrestre abbraccia 230 ettari e un territorio marino di 4.900 ettari. È il più importante rifugio di uccelli marini dei Caraibi Messicani. Le sue lagune, mangrovie e foresta bassa sono l’ambiente di 152 specie di uccelli registrati. A cominciare dall’inverno vi si concentrano più di 10.000 uccelli, includendo fregate, cormorani, sule, garze, pellicani bruni e rondini marine.
Durante l’estate, tre specie di tartarughe marine arrivano sulle spiagge di Contoy a deporre le uova: la tartaruga Carey, la Bianca e la Caguama.
Delle 98 specie di piante identificate, specialmente le mangrovie che coprono il 70% della superficie dell’isola sono rimaste intatte, e ospitano molte specie di uccelli, rettili, crostacei e pesci.
Le acque circostanti di Contoy sono molto abbondanti di sostanze nutritive che servono come alimento al plancton che costituisce la base alimentare di più di 234 specie di pesci identificati nella zona, includendo i maestosi squali balena e razze che si alimentano nei pressi delle sue coste.
Nella Barriera Corallina Ixlachè abbondano splendide specie di corallo, pesci e organismi dal grande valore commerciale, l’aragosta spinosa e la chiocciola rosa. Il numero di visitatori del parco è limitato a 200 persone al giorno. Vi si può arrivare mediante imbarcazioni autorizzate partendo da Cancun, Puerto Juarez o Isla Mujeres. L’orario di partenza è alle 9:00 e il ritorno è approssimativamente alle 17:00. la traversata dura tra una e due ore, dipendendo dal tipo di imbarcazioni, dal punto di partenza e dal tempo.

The rocks on the upper part of the frame create depth and lead-in the eye on the far end of the horizon.

Ciao Luciano, uno scenario e dei colori che solamente ai caraibi è possibile riscontrare. Quelle tonalità di verde dell'acqua sono fantastiche e danno veramente la sensazione freschezza e pulizia del mare. Ottima scelta per la pov, lasciando solamente una striscia di cielo e privilegiando il primo piano con i due simpatici personaggi. Tra Cuba e queste isole ci stai facendo vedere un'eccellente reportage. Ciao e buona domenica.

Un vero paradiso di acque trasparenti, che peraltro conosco: sono stata da quelle parti( Isla Mujers) circa 20 anni fa. Ovvero quasi in una vita precedente... molto lieta di constatare, grazie alla tua immagine, che da allora nulla sia cambiato. Talvolta esistono anche i miracoli!

Nice symmetry of the 2 sea-birds and it also looks like paradise for people, at least in between hurricanes! I love the azure turquoise color of the fg tapering off to aquamarine in the deeper bg water. Good sharpness & framing. Have a beautiful Sunday!

une eau aussi bleue et aussi transaparente, ça fait rêver, surtout qu'il ne semble pas y avoir beaucoup de monde. Seule les 2 oiseaux donnent une très agréable animation à ce magnifique endroit.

La distance entre les canard et l'horizon donne de la profondeur à la composition. Elle est bien divisée, le ciel, la mer et les oiseaux. La prise de vue permet d'apprécier ce paysage tropical. La bonne luminosité rehausse les couleurs de l'image. Bonne journée.

las tonalidades y la transparencia de esta agua tan limpia son extraordinarias, la paleta cromática que has captado en esta imagen tiene una gran belleza, igual que esta preciosa playa.
Me gusta el encuadre con una pequeña franja de cielo y un gran protagonismo del mar, de la playa, de la barrera de coral y de los dos pájaros marinos, que parecen muy felices en este lugar tan hermoso.

Quel beau dégradé de bleu!! Ta photo ne donne pas l'impression que ce lieu n'est un paradis que pour les oiseaux.On a tous envie d'y aller.Les oiseaux sont super bien placés dans la composition et lui donne sa force.

impressive the colors of the sea, they are so curious that the far background looks like a blue wall, not a sea. I have a photo from a similar kind of bird in chile. very nice inclusion of them, the compo has an incridible minimalist mood. TFS.

Sembra in realtà come un pezzo di paradiso perduto. L'acqua trasparente, bellissimi uccelli su di esso, in lontananza il mare turchese. Ottima composizione in meravigliosi colori e qualità perfetta.

love the fact that the birds almost seem to be floating, and the water is so crystal clear, like high end diamonds.

If you were trying to promote Mexico as a great holiday destination, this would work very well. The colour of the sea and mood of tranquility are very attractive elements.
I like your compositione very much. The turquoise sea makes a fine separation line with the blue of the sky, whilst the rippling, shallow sea in the f/g completes the thirds.
Those sea birds are perfectly placed within the frame!

The composition is intriguing! About 98% (:-)) of the shot is blue & empty space. The attraction lies in the FG with those two gulls taking so less of space in the frame & yet grabbing our attention straightway! The colour of thw water in the distance...a fine turquoise is alluring! A fine work!
