February 2nd is Groundhog Day in the United States. Three hundred years ago German Settlers of America introduced a peculiar ceremony, still celebrated annually in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Members of the Groundhog Club emerge from their clubhouse with their weather-predicting groundhog to make a critical announcement. If the rodent does not see its shadow, the members rejoice, declaring that Winter is officially over. Or conversely, if it does see its shadow, they declare that winter will persist.
A video was posted from the ceremony, showing the members of the Groundhog Club wearing formalwear, including top hats, to present Punxsutawney Phil. In the video the groundhog is seen sitting on the shoulder of one of his handlers. Today (Wednesday, February 2, 2011) the Groundhog Club claimed that Phil did not see his shadow, and accordingly that winter is at an end.
Ironically, the Northern and Northeastern regions of the nation have been in the grip of an extraordinary winter storm, virtually paralyzing most metropolitan areas.
This photo is a re-post of a shot, "Minus Forty" that I had never been happy with (it left me cold). It was shot exactly 33-years ago (in February 1978) in Cleveland, Ohio using a semi-automatic Nikon F, and first posted four years ago.
Incidentally, according to statistics, the groundhog is correct about 40% of the time, not much worse than the weatherman.

That's what I call an interesting contribution - and I even heard about it in the radio news here. Your impressive picture is a very good complement to the note and vice versa ;-) Thank you!
Greetings from cold and humid Germany!

Bonjour, cher ami Bulent,

A very lovely shot indeed and people used to say that a masterpiece is one that stood the test of time. I particularly enjoyed the notes and the beautiful naturally sculptured landscape is fascinating and awesome. Thanks also for the good scan so that we can fully appreciate and enjoy this scene. Brilliant!!!

An interesting and amusing note to accompany this icy composition. A well presented image from your archives with excellent sharpness and point of view.

Hi Bulent, See this with the tropical heat of Kuala Lumpur outside, so it shows the diversity of weather in different parts of the world. The storms this year around New York, Queensland, UK, Brazil and elsewhere seem to show the weather is becoming more vicious or it seems that way. This image looks like out of the Day after tomorrow movie. TFS.Murray

Ola Bulent ,

First of all I appreciate the archival value of the photo. The shot shows snows in such a way that it comes across as quite gruesome. Though, being all white, the details are enough to give a real feel of
-40. The note makes it even more interesting.

Merhaba Bülent Hocam
Donmamış hiç bir şey kalmamış burada. Ben ağrıda Yedeksubay öğretmenlik yaparken, kış ayında ,içlik olarak iki eşofman,başımda bere, atkımla yalnızca gözlerim açık, yüzümün her tarafını kapatarak abartısız kirpiklerimdeki buzları silerek okula gittiğimi biliyorum.

Oldie, but goodie is fitting for this amazing shot. The frozen waterfall looks so cold and illustrates well the extremely harsh winter weather stretching across much of the United States this week. Clarity, details, and colors of the photo are impressive. I enjoyed the video presenting Punxsutawney Phil. An early spring would be wonderful. Lets hope the groundhog's prediction for this year in is the 40% correct category.
photoray (13981) 2011-02-03 9:12
You have posted an excellent view representing the current midwest freeze. Your original photo was well composed and in fine detail, and a good job with today's scanning.
The good news I read - Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow and therefore winter will end immediately !?
Thanks for sharing, and hope everyone is staying warm,
PS: We also had a bad cold front move into Palm Springs, California - the daytime high was only 70 degrees Fahrenheit......
worldcitizen (8654) 2011-02-03 9:30
This is an interesting winter shot. It seems that while a lot of the water was frozen, there was still some flowing as we can see on the right side. This photo is a perfect representation of the winter we've been having here in the eastern US. By the way, thanks for your workshop and critique on my most recent photo. :-)
Urs (14082) 2011-02-03 17:12
A very interesting historic fact, I had no idea about it. To predict they used groundhog to predict the weather. If winter really would be over on February 2, that would be a rather short winter. Good shot of this winter scenery I like it, it really makes you feel cold. Good photo job.
I was in the train myself when I shot the station you critiqued. There will be more pictures of this trip coming up.

Merhaba dear Bulent
A fascinating and ironic note to accompany this impressive photo. Yes, it seems winter is definitely over, all that ice was a dead giveaway ;) But perhaps the rgoundhog was right. Beautiful textures and plays of light and shadow. The frozen water is like a sculpture. Wonderful and something I have never seen before. TFS and I wish you a beautiful Friday.

An old image but again a image that very well suitable with the weather of today in America.
It's always very nice for see, that regular we get the same type of weather.
This is a real weather picture, we would this type picture use on TV.
Excellent scanned, perfect of colors and nice perspective too.
Very well done, TFS.

Bülent Bey Merhaba,
Resmen fotoğrafı görünce üşüdüm.
Buz kesmiş ortalık
Görüntü olarak çok güzel. Ama orada olmak zor olmalı.
Fotoğrafı çekince kaçabileceğiniz bir sıcak ortam varmıydı. hala üşüyorum denilebilir. Bu fotoğraftan.
Muhteşem bir fotoğraf

Hi my dear Bulent
This is another singificant impressive nature shot indeed. We have quite same palace in Japan.
Very sharp and clear presentation and description in the detail. I cannot help perceiving the greatness of the nature by this your great shot. Thanks for sharing with your finest posting, have a nice weekend and best regards,

Have a nice day.

Hi Bulent, After the great movie with Bill Murray And Andie McDowell this peculiar custom is very well known. It seems now that Phil was right and winter is over. All snow disappeared in Warsaw and today it was 8 centigrades. Old photo, and so cold! The view of the frozen cascade always makes impression. I am shivering looking at it :).

Such a cold and frozen scene is fully appropriate for celebrating the end of winter. Thanks for interesting and informative story about the Groundhog Day! Now it is celebrated here, in Ukraine, too. The picture was taken with the excellent composition and perfect photographic and aesthetic qualities. A very good job!

Hello Bulent, the quality of the original slide shines through,a truly exceptional image of winter.
Just as a matter of interest, here in the South West of England the story goes that badgers were, and still are the animal used.
Best wishes Les.

Ciao dear Bulent,
very funny the video! But are true the marmots?
Beautiful winter photo, a true embroidery of ice, accompanied by interesting notes. I see, with pleasure, that the American weathermen are similar to those Italian... :-)
Ciao, have a nice week!
AKITA (15125) 2011-02-06 21:33
an amazing view of wonderfully iced fall and river,
lots of huge icicles are really splendid and beautiful too, those are quite like artistic columns,
so chilly but natural figure of water is impressive,
thank you for your excellent shot,

asajernigan (21427) 2011-02-07 3:13
This is a great shot of this frosty scene. The angle of the shot is nice using the waterfall to lead the eye across the scene. The B&W format works well here emphasizing the cold atmosphere.
JCG (35129) 2011-02-07 4:57
Winter 1977 to engrave in the memories!!! To make the photograph under these climatic conditions was not to be easy But currently part of the United States is swept by a historical cold wave according to the meteorologists. A beautiful photograph on this almost cold waterfall. A good scan and an interesting note, as usual, thank you Bülent.
With all my friendships and a very good week,
patdeph (35748) 2011-02-07 22:35
I think that here, the groundhog was able to see its shadow! The waterfalls under the ice are spectacular, and this is very beautiful.
J_Burke (1285) 2011-02-08 1:12
This is an excellent representation of extraordinary winter conditions. Great view and nicely framed with the waterfall on the right, I like the contrast of the water and ice in the foreground, the shape of the transition adds to the composition. Fantastic note too to accomadate the image. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Bulent. Icy nature. This winter has everything under control. For the viewer, everything looks natural and beautiful. My compliments for this landmark work of art in nature. Rgds, Wolfgang.
Royaldevon (38896) 2011-02-08 16:26
Thank you for these very interesting notes, Bulent.
I had heard of Groundhog Day but knew nothing about its date or significance. (There is so much to learn!)
You have done a fine conversion. The details are sharp and convey a chill to the viewer! There is an amazing similarity to stalactites!
My warm regards,
Budapestman (82620) 2011-02-09 11:26
a beautiful winter impression with spectacular details and composition, Tfs! Have a nice evening! Kellemes estét kívánok!

Indeed a wintry scene, and not quite unknown to me hehehe!
It looks cold and it is cold, and what is totally impossible for me to understand is there are people that like to swim in water like this...
Fortunately for you I notice this didn't happen yesterday, but the image carries a lot of interest value in spite (or maybe because of) its 34 years of age..!
MJR (3360) 2011-02-13 14:33
I clicked on this image as I knew it had to be a winter shot of Niagara... How wrong was I. What a clever piece of imagery, old as it may be, quite convincing the casual eye it is of something much much larger, like the Horseshoe at Niagara ! It reminds me of prints I must have somewhere of my trip there in the winter 1998, I must dig them out and reappraise them for TE... I was blindly in love at the time, perhaps they are not as good as I remember them !
AND, I was curious at the title, a phrase I have heard of before of course, but never had taken the time to find out it's source, so thank you for another scholarly note.

Very impressive winter scene you captured.
Excellent point of view.
Fantastic managment of light which give beautiful white color well exposed.
Angshu (56758) 2011-02-18 22:07
Dear Professor 'A'
Quite an amazing scene...while the right side of the falls seems pretty normal, the left side of it has frozen completely...and on top of that we have the stalagmite type structures, right of centre (wonder what they are)!
For my tropical eyes, this is quite exotic (If I may use this word)
With Warmest Regards
Docarmo (9639) 2011-02-19 9:09
Excellent work with the photo, at each stage. Hats off!
Very interesting note.

Hi Bulent, my friend -- an amazing image.. taken so long ago -- Film was a very good medium.. Very good note - I had not reaised about Ground Hog day -- a very good note-- well done and have a great day Rich

I'm thinking here how special is the nature to produce a beauty such thats. Your photograph is part of this beauty
very interesting and even more for us at 30 centigrade ...

A few characters that this shot is missing, are the "ICE AGE" guys. the first thing to strike me - "hey, where is SID, MANNY, DIEAGO?". I must appreciate the POV is just superb. TFS

Amazing photo at such a cold, (and I remember 1978 winter as I decided not to endure another winter in NYC, and return to Israel later).
Fabulous clear shot on ice, and nice note added.
nobuikehonda (3848) 2011-06-07 14:47
Hello professor Atalay,
It is surprising that since this photograph is taken 33 years has elapsed. The clarity of the image is there and the image is very sharp. It is very difficult to think and imagine that this image is a result of scanning. For a good image there is absolutely no time limit. (I like Nikon F. It's a great camera. I still have F2 as a collection.) Almost totally frozen waterfall is very well presented. Almost monochromatic effect of the image gives me a real sense the cold day. It is another great image.
Very informative note is also very well appreciated, I knew nothing about the Groundhog day. I am learning.
Very best regards,
