This is a very cute little guy I met at Woy Woy. There was a massive flock of pelicans feeding here in the afternoon. I named my new friend Spike because of his hair-style.

You have made a good attempt here, choosing to go in tight on the Australian Pelican. The composition works well, and the focus with shallower DOF draws the attention to the Pelican. The Pelican itself is very well-exposed, which can be tricky with predominantly white and black subjects.
Thanks to the soft light the Pelican's plumage is rendered incredibly well, with great feather detail, and it's also lovely and sharp.

Ha-ha Lisa - The minute I saw this a silly little limerick popped into my head and I have to share it with you. I always said it to my boys when we saw one down at the coast. So ... forgive me this little bit of nostalgia please.
A wonderful bird is a pelican,
His bill will hold more than his belican.
He can take in his beak
Food enough for a week;
But I'm damned if I see how the helican.

A super shot and 'Spike' is a perfect name for him. I have to say though his beady eye is looking at me in a most disconcerting way! Beautiful sharpness and detail on the feathers and I really love the baby-pink beak and pale yellow eye. Warm regards Rosemary

Gidday Lisa, and Gidday Spike!
Really nicely done Lisa, I find birds very difficult to capture, as no matter how many I take, on any setting, some part of them seems to always end up blurry, so the crystal clarity of this is really a treat. His colours are beautiful too, the pink bill looks great against his B&W body. He has a funny face too.
Thanks for sharing

What a fabulous bird. I like the way that it is displaying one of its wings in a cheeky 'hello' pose. The detail on its neck and feathers is super. The shallow DOF gives all the detail where it is needed - excellent.
Kind Regards, Ann

A sensational macro zoom-in capture of so elusive graceful bird well composed from corner to corner. Seeing this close is absolutely awe inspiring, the incredible details and the plumage are just wonderful, so well focused for maximum sharpness, excellent eye contact and contrast stunningly to dark background. Really well photographed, brilliant timing at a perfect angle, this is a great piece of wild life shot. I think you must have been really pleased with this shot. Well done, TFS

I am not sure if our international friends know how prolific these birds are in Australia, how often they are photographed and how often their images are presented for judging in camera clubs. Your image stands out from the crowd due to your composition, the bird's pose and the magnificent light in which you have captured 'him'. With the low angled light coming from behind the bird you have captured some nice highlights on the bird's raised wing and some nice rim light around the head, beak and neck. Detail is maintained within the darker parts.
All the best,
snunney (90798) 2012-12-05 4:22
A very good choice of name if I may say so. You have captured him under a good light and in exceptional detail. I wonder what Spike Milligan would have made of him?
I would be very happy to take you up on your offer of a list of places to visit around Sorrento. Perhaps I can email you nearer the time?

one of my friends is called Spike and he looks just like this! ;-) Joking aside this is just a gorgeous shot of this Spike. Love the light and detailing here plus the wonderful eye and beak colouring. The patterns on the water are such a pleasing backdrop and make him/her stand out so magnificently. Wonderful!
Regards - Brian.

I hope that you don't give a name to every bird you encounter, but that one deserved to be baptise. I like the light on the white feather. I think he has an eye on you.
Have a nice day

Excellent travail.
Félicitations!... et toutes mes amitiés,

Ciao cara Lisa,
Oh, I do like your new friend! And what an appropriate name - Spike - I like that too.
I was going to quote the same little poem which Rosemary did but I won't be repetitive (for once!) though I do remember it was one of my Mum's favourite little ditties.
Spike looks pretty cool - and pretty smug too, I think - and you have caught him in the most delicious oblique light which not only shows off his beautiful plumage to great effect but also really highlights his wonderful hair-style which is, after all, what really made you fancy him so much. But that we could all turn the ladies' heads as only Spike can do!
A fabulous photograph (the only photograph I know of yours which shows a close up of one of these birds though you have shown us flocks of them in the distance before) with lovely light, perfect exposure (in difficult conditions of very strong contrasts), lovely soft colours and stunning details and sharpness.
Oh, and that big beady eye!

molto brava nel fermare il movimento dell'animale e ad usare il controluce come arricchimento della foto.
Ottima la tecnica e la qualità,

Hello Dear Lisa,
I think Spike approves of his new name. He is certainly cocking an appreciative eye, a little flurry of the wing, in your direction!
A very attractive, close-up, which gives excellent textural details and uses a well chosen dof.
Have a lovely day,
ourania (37398) 2012-12-09 6:34
Ciao cara Lisa,
Tanti saluti ebuona settimana,

have a good week
macjake (62350) 2012-12-10 10:47
so is Spike a male of female! other than stating the obvious...how do you tell a male from a female pelican?
its funny how when you look at photo's of animals, you think you know how they look but when you really study the big guy here ya see things that stand out. for example the yellow eye shadow lol
and their beaks are amazing arent they! pretty cool looking guy this Spike is!
I wanted to ask you...and forgive me if alot of people have already asked....whats your take on the Australian radio jockies that pranked that Nurse who took her own life? I suppose its causing quite the stir in your native land!
see you around
photoray (13719) 2012-12-11 14:25
Excellent composition for the lighting direction, fine resolution and up close of this attractive pelican. Definitely different specie from our Brown California Pelicans.
Also good use of less focused surrounding water, to emphasize the star - Spike.
Have a productive and fun filled Summer,

As I try to get over yet another wonderful Aussie place name (Woy Woy? Really?) I have to add my praise on this, a great moment captured for a really good-looking pelican. Especially in motion like this guy is, this isn't an easy capture, but you got it effortlessly, with wonderful light and framing to enhance the scene. Great muted colors as well.

Nice to have new friends...
Beautiful photo portrait to a pelican, great outlines of his feathers and beak, with a fascinating eye-ball in yellow & black.
Fine picture collected.
