Waterton Lake is a mountain lake in southern Alberta, Canada and northern Montana, USA.
UNESCO established the Waterton Biosphere Reserve to protect the diverse habitats including prairie grasslands, aspen parkland, subalpine forests, alpine tundra and freshwater fens that surround the lake. The Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park was inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995.
Prince of Wale Hotel, constructed between 1926-1927, the hotel was built by the American Great Northern Railway to lure American tourists during the prohibition-era south of the border. The hotel was named after the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII), in a transparent attempt to entice him to stay in the hotel on his 1927 Canadian tour, but the Prince stayed at a nearby ranch instead.
The Prince of Wales Hotel enjoys the distinction of being the sole establishment among Canada's grand railway hotels to have been built by an American, as opposed to a Canadian, railway company. The hotel was designated a national historic site by the Canadian government in 1995.

Nice wide shot of this fairy tale like scene. The mountains forming the background are just beautiful!
Im sure the hotel would love this image to promote themselves on their website or something!
abadlovesong (274) 2008-11-11 18:43
Excellent photo. Well exposed, and the mountains and lake make a great back drop. Just beautiful. The colors in this photo are just perfect. Thank you.

Nice panoramic of the Prince of Wales. The composition is very good, but obviously the time of day isn't ideal. As a result, the clouds look a bit blown out, and there's a bit of a halo around the edge of the mountains on the left side. Those are my only complaints though. Nice shot. I didn't know about the Prince of Wales' snub--funny story. :)

Beautiful panoramic that shows the old hotel in its grand setting.

Fantastic panorama, the large format is very effective to show the beauty of this shot. I will make sure to visit this lake next time I head up that way!
grantlp (2113) 2008-11-11 19:48
Hello Way Ne,
What a wonderful, picturesque scene, with those mountains forming a great backdrop to the hotel. I like your POV allowing us to see the mountains far into the distance. The clouds provide nice interest to the sky, and the golden coloured field in the foreground provides a colour contrast. Very well done.
InasiaJones (31566) 2008-11-11 21:17
I'm a canadian, but it's the first time I see this good looking hotel. I wasn't aware of Waterton lake neither and your note is very funny and insightful.
The large version looks terrific with crisp details and flattering light. I wonder if the Prince had such a beautiful view on its ranch...
abulafia (4900) 2008-11-11 23:01
That is a great view Way
High quality indeed, the large post really impresses.
Great place for a hotel, and I agree with Dave that the Hotel might want a copy og this one.

La lumière est belle et cette architecture est intérescente.
Le choix du panoramique est un plus je trouve.
Floydian (30970) 2008-11-12 4:26
Yep i was there in August. Staying nearby at the lake and was willing to make a picture like this but then far from above. I took the wrong hike and never saw the view i wanted. Your stitched version looks pretty good with bright colours on the building and the wide perspective depth in to the far distance on the right.
A nice place to stay when coming from Glacier and a very interesting area to stay.

Been in the Waterton area a few times and always note this landmark. It stands tall and serves as a "beacom" especially to newcomers. I like your perspective and the panorama is quite creative here. TFS. Gerald

Although I do not specially like such format, this photo is a real rarity for the eye.
Beautifully framed and composed.

the large version is really superb! The hotel is situated in a splendid place!I like very much the right side, with the perspective on the different layers of the misty mountains, giving a very good depth! The sky is superb with its srong blue and beautiful clouds!Magnificent!
MarcT (20964) 2008-11-13 7:49
Very nice panoramic shot of that beautiful place. Perfectly presented with natural colors and sharp details.
Sistercosmo (242) 2008-11-13 12:03
excellent pov, wonderful colors, great sky and perfect clarity. Excellent compo. The hotel seems out of place in this so natural setting - might be the reason the Prince never stopped by. His loss... ;-))
Take care and see you!
mark_mk (266) 2008-11-13 13:03
wow! This is a beauty. I remember this place because I saw a report about it on TV like a year ago. I have no idea what they said about it, but I remember this house, it`s unique.
Lovely light on the left part and some very dramatic clouds on the right part of the image, beautiful. Perfect placement of this hotel and thanks for the informative note!
shevchenko (20548) 2008-11-13 18:41
Good pov to include background mountain ranges, what a beautiful and natural environment to stay, distinct image in good lighting and color, thanks for sharing the UNESCO building.
trekks (14348) 2008-11-14 8:55
Very impressive LV of this superb landscape and captured in great light condition. I quite like your choice of wide view to place the hotel in such prominent position to block the mountains, and really dont mind it because of your title.
I notice too that that hotel is at the same 'level' with the mountains.
baba_flies (8829) 2008-11-14 10:46
Hello Way! I stood in front of this hotel but I was not staying overnight but rather in my little tent with the bears :)))) Well I saw bears but not close to my tent but I heard people in front of this hotel discussing their hike and their experiences with a bear. You know why I decided to visit this park? Mainly because of this hotel! I saw a picture in Geo which is similar to National Geograpics and this photographer focused just on this hotel and the lake and the mountains around it and it was taken on a rainy day when the sun came through just a little and I thought that this hotel was the only thing in this environment which is not quite true and I was a little disappointed when I arrived but you know it is a great hotel with a special architecure, the way you show it, and the landscape around it is fantastic and worth the long driving I think. Great photo of yours and I like the beautiful clouds and of course the long chain of mountains in the back. What a place ... Barbara.
paololg (31448) 2008-11-14 15:43

jmcl (14535) 2008-11-25 7:48
Beautiful and striking image of this place .. The combination of detail and vastness is wonderful ... as is the sense of the vast building dwarfed by the infinite and empty wilderness .. take care, John
Ptitcaid (656) 2008-11-25 11:06

plimrn (21344) 2008-12-20 9:14
Great light and shadow play on the mountains; the large version really emphasizes the lovely detail of the mountains as they fade into the distance on the right. Great story too.
alexisborel (755) 2008-12-20 12:20
The hotel is really in harmony with landscape and your picture manage it well.
Clouds also offer an excellent sky and the right part justify why you made a panoramic, the background.
Have a good day
pauloog (11751) 2009-01-20 2:05

WOW... i would like to stay there. What a perfect place with sch wonderful view!! LOvely panorama stich you did here. Thank sfor showing this place.
Angshu (56760) 2009-03-20 0:49
This is a good wide view. I presume this is a stitched shot going by the extent of the width we can see here, almost 180 deg. The setting of the place is amazing, surrounded by lakes and high mountains. Especially like the layers of mountains on the right & the clouds. The LV, without a doubt is excellent!
sacimar (26851) 2009-09-02 10:32
This is a beautiful place and a good composition, I like the panoramic option, the depth of the image in the right side is really fantastic, good details and sharpness, well done!
