Gastown is an area of Vancouver that is a photographers heaven. The architecture is unique, the shops are fun, the bars and lounges are plentiful, the atmosphere is memorable.
Gassy Jack, a Yorkshire Seaman, first settled here in 1867 and opened up vancouver's very first saloon - and I guess you could say the rest is History! Without Gassy Jack Vancouver may not be what it is today. A statue of Gassy is directly to my left - perhaps i'll show that one later on. If you havn't already figured it out, there's a reason why this area is called Gastown! :)
I was here early in the morning for black hour and blue hour shots. As i'm walking around the cobblestone streets - probably the only one of its kind in Vancouver - I noticed this Corner shop. Using my 8-16 mm lens, i got really close to the ground on my tripod and used the distortion of the lens to create this dramatic pose. With the 6 second exposure time, this was initially a Blue Hour photo, but when i converted it to black and white the visual impact was greater.
Hope you like it
Happy New Year!

A real eye-catcher Craig. The distortion is super; I like the way the tree branches lean into the frame, they look as if they are reaching out to the building. The B&W has a slick luminous quality which is very attractive and you have managed the shot with precision and artistry. Excellent shot. Warm wishes for 2012. Rosemary

a fantastic effect giving a nice metellic look the the street, maybe due to the harmony of grey tones, and reflecions on the walls. With the wide angle, the perspective becomes more impressive, and I love the details of the luminous points in the branches of the tree.Very beautiful and superbly done!

Your wide lens (as well, of course, as your skill) has made this a very dramatic photograph.
Wonderful lighting, fabulous contrasts and, as always, exquisite details and sharpness.
Very Best Wishes for the New Year!

Amazing B&W foto with great POV...
Happy new year
jjcordier (79014) 2012-01-01 22:07

Regards and Happy new year.

How nice looks this B%W, so limpid, so sharp! The distortion makes the shot even more interesting.
All the best my friend!

what a fantastic place! I love so much the distortion of the lens you used here, and the very precious B/W. I'm not sure about the low cut on the right. It is however a great and eye catching shot!
Happy new year!
CLODO (32174) 2012-01-02 1:28
Nice use of an ultra wide angle, and a unique atmosphere due to the B&W conversion. Thankfully, there is not a person on your picture, but I am sure you will post some in the next posts!!! LOL
Have a nice 2012 year
snunney (89960) 2012-01-02 4:24
The lens distortion contributes much to the success of this fine composition. Good use of black and white to heighten the mood even more. Superb technical presentation. Happy New Year to you.

The crushed perspective is spectacular, and does not leave indifferent. It is one very beautiful photo, of high quality. Bravo.
Have a nice day

Le POV a ras du sol et l'angle de prise donne un effet impressionnant et très réussi, bonne perspective, les lumières dans les arbres, un beau contraste du N/B, compliment

Amazing the effect achieved is a photo that does not let you look straight ahead, takes you to raise your head up. I love the light and contrasts. Bravo!

Hi my dear Craig
A HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Great description for this attractive building by your own way. You wisely used the fish-eye lens to enhance this building's characteristics very well. Clearness and sharpness as wonderful as usual.
Thanks for your sharinig with finest work and have the good start of 2012!

Wanda1 (15000) 2012-01-03 2:36
Indeed the super wide angle distortion gives an interesting effect. The frame is well filled by the building and the bare tree branches on the left hand side. Black and white coinversion gives it a timeless feel.
All the best for 2012!
jhm (144268) 2012-01-03 3:38
Sharpness and clarity are perfect, your superwide lens gives a very great distortion.
I am noot the great fan of this type image, but this is personal.
Nevertheless a very good image we get a lot to see.
Thank you very much for your visit to my pictures during 2011.
Composition and presentation are pleasant.
Very well done, TFS.

I have been waiting to write this all day!
We have had terrific winds and the Internet, along with phone lines, have been off all day! It's surprising how much we rely on the Internet these days; we've been suffering withdrawal symptoms!
Love the quirkiness of your shot. The building looks as if it has been given supernatural powers, as in a cartoon. It looks very impressive. It is sharp, it is detailed and, it really makes the viewer scrutinse the the scene.
I congratulate you for trying something new and ... it worked.
My warm regards,
claudeD (35469) 2012-01-03 13:13
Very funny that we had nearly the same idea. I like your shot here very much and I think that your conversion to b+w is a very good solution to realize here a perfect fotojob. very well done. TFS.
With regards from Luxembourg

tutta la forza e l'incisivita del B&W in questa tua immagine.
Mi piace molto la deformazione creata dall'obiettivo e l'ottimo sharp,
tatadalou (7219) 2012-01-03 15:36
Necessary to use the tripod for such a precise rendering. The light is superbly managed and the transition to black and white has probably a positive impact. The distortion gives a very original and spectacular effect to the whole.
eldancer1 (32051) 2012-01-04 9:36
Wow! I like your pov, this reminds me of the Gaslamp district in downtown San Diego. Good dof with nice details and good capture of the lighting against the fading sunlight. Very well done, tfs.
Angshu (56574) 2012-01-05 8:21
I loved seeing this one...the use of wide angle lens has clearly accentuated the distortion which to me is excellent here. The low POV, the falling lines work well. It was nearly 9 in the morning when you took this shot, yet quite dark. Conversion to B&W was also a master stroke! Fine work my friend!
Wish you & your dear ones the best for the New Year which has just begun
sacavem (18614) 2012-01-06 3:24
Very grateful for his words, comment and congratulations on my 5th year in TE...

Hansaphotos (7351) 2012-01-07 6:53
Fabulous work with your new lens. Very nice old architecture. The deserted streets together with the lighting and the choice of B&W creates a kind of spooky or abandoned mood. Excellent work:) TFS. Have a nice WE.
Best regards, Erling
lilito (3510) 2012-01-16 5:59
Absente temporairement de TE, je vois qu'il y a pas mal de belles choses dans ta gallerie. Cette image me plait beaucoup, elle est superbe en N&B et avec une persepective impressionante.
delpeoples (55090) 2012-01-18 23:19
Oh yeah, I love this as much as you do. Love the lens distortion, the strong contrasts and impressive sharpness. That wide angle lens is getting some fantastic results eh. Too right having it up on your wall, this is one of your best for sure. Hey, how come you're getting all these dedications at the moment? Santo, Matt...what am I doing wrong? ;)
Have a great day and TFS
